Apple Tests Flip-Style Foldable iPhone as Book-Style Model Approaches 2026 Launch

Apple has started testing a clamshell foldable iPhone with a flip design, according to supply chain information shared by a Chinese leaker. The development adds a second potential form factor to the company's foldable lineup, separate from the book-style device set to debut in September.

The Weibo account Fixed Focus Digital, which has provided verifiable details on Apple's component sourcing in the past, reported the testing on February 13:

"Apple has officially tested a ‘Flip’ style folding iPhone, but it’s currently undetermined whether it will move on toward mass production," the leaker wrote in the post.

The flip model would fold vertically in the manner of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola's Razr devices, prioritizing a compact profile when closed. It would join Apple's first foldable iPhone, a horizontally opening book-style unit expected to feature a roughly 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen.

Bloomberg's highly credible reporter Mark Gurman had signaled the possibility earlier in the month. He described Apple as exploring a smaller, square-shaped clamshell device to serve as a follow-up to the initial foldable, which carries a premium price point projected above $2,000.

The flip iPhone would target users seeking pocketable foldables rather than the expansive screen real estate of the book model. No specifications for the clamshell prototype have surfaced, including display dimensions, hinge mechanics or camera setup.

Testing of the flip design occurs as suppliers ramp up components for the book-style foldable. Mass production of that device is slated to begin in the third quarter, positioning it for release alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Apple has evaluated multiple foldable prototypes over the years, including variations in screen size and orientation. The current emphasis on both book and clamshell formats reflects an effort to cover different segments of the foldable market, where Samsung holds the lead with its Z series.

The leaker noted that decisions on advancing the iPhone Flip to volume manufacturing will depend on further evaluation.

If approved, the device could reach stores as early as 2027.
