Isabella May Ramsey, better known as Bella Ramsey, was born on September 25, 2003, in Nottingham, England, and began acting at age four as a hobby at Loughborough Stagecoach Theatre Arts.
At age ten, they joined the Television Workshop in Nottingham, a training ground that connected them with casting director Nina Gold, the woman who would hand them their first professional audition.
That audition changed everything.
Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones
Ramsey was twelve years old when they walked onto the Game of Thrones set and became Lyanna Mormont, the Lady of Bear Island.
The character was initially written for a single scene in season 6, episode 7, “The Broken Man.” Co-showrunner D.B. Weiss later admitted that Ramsey’s performance was so commanding that the production team immediately expanded Lyanna into a recurring role across seasons 7 and 8.
Lyanna Mormont is the youngest daughter of Maege Mormont, forced to rule Bear Island after her mother is killed fighting for Robb Stark during the War of the Five Kings. When Jon Snow, Sansa Stark, and Ser Davos Seaworth come seeking her allegiance against the White Walkers, this ten-year-old ruler stares down three adults and demands to know why she should trust them.
She agrees, eventually, pledging a modest 62 fighting men, but she leads them herself. Later, she is the first Northern lord to declare Jon Snow the King in the North, cutting through the room’s hesitation with a speech that still echoes in Thrones fan circles.
Her final moment, charging a White Walker giant during the Battle of Winterfell in season 8, remains one of the show’s most talked-about deaths.
Vulture called her the show’s “newest scene-stealer” after her first appearance, and The Hollywood Reporter named Ramsey the sixth season’s breakout star.
Ellie in The Last of Us
If Game of Thrones introduced Ramsey to the world, The Last of Us cemented their place in it. Premiering in January 2023 on HBO, the post-apocalyptic drama adapts the acclaimed video game of the same name.
Ramsey plays Ellie Williams, a 14-year-old orphan who is immune to the Cordyceps fungus that has turned most of humanity into infected, zombie-like creatures.

Catherine Called Birdy (2022)
Directed by Lena Dunham and adapted from Karen Cushman’s 1994 novel, this medieval comedy stars Ramsey as Birdy, the teenage daughter of a financially struggling lord in 13th-century England.
Her father (Andrew Scott) plans to marry her off to the highest bidder. Birdy has other ideas. Ramsey is ferociously funny in the role, swinging between slapstick and genuine vulnerability.
The performance earned them a Critics’ Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Young Performer. Ramsey also wrote the song “Birdy Song,” featured in the film, when they were just ten years old.
Judy (2019)
