Volvo Previews 2027 XC60 Facelift With Extended Hybrid Range

Volvo Cars is preparing a second facelift for its XC60 luxury midsize SUV ahead of a planned production start in late 2026. The Swedish automaker intends to keep the gas- and hybrid-powered model on sale alongside its upcoming all-electric EX60 sibling.

Assembly of the updated 2027 XC60 will take place at Volvo's manufacturing plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The refreshed vehicle features updated front styling, modernized interior electronics, and an upgraded plug-in hybrid system with increased battery capacity.

Volvo Cars Chief Commercial Officer Erik Severinson outlined the automaker's strategy during a Q2 earnings briefing.

"So more to come, and we're seeing the potential."

Severinson confirmed that Volvo will invest in next-generation plug-in hybrid technology at the South Carolina factory to meet ongoing consumer demand.

Exterior adjustments focus on the SUV's front end. The vehicle adopts narrower headlights with a simplified single horizontal Thor's Hammer light signature, a reshaped diagonal grille, and boxier vertical air curtains along the lower bumper.

Side profiles offer new wheel designs ranging from 18 inches to 22 inches in size. Rear alterations remain subtle, concentrating on tweaked taillight graphics and a restyled lower bumper cover.

Inside the cabin, the 2027 XC60 incorporates technology developed for Volvo's newest electric models. Drivers will see an 11.4-inch digital instrument cluster combined with a central touchscreen powered by the HuginCore computing system and Google Gemini software.

The vehicle introduces multi-adaptive safety belts for front occupants. These seat belts automatically adjust tension based on the body size of the passenger and the speed and angle of an incoming crash.

Engineering revisions centered around the plug-in hybrid powertrain promise a boost in zero-emission driving range. Reports from TopElectricSUV and Motor1 indicate a larger battery pack could push electric-only driving range close to 100 miles on a single charge.

Standard B5 mild-hybrid variants will remain in production for buyers seeking traditional gasoline engines. Certain plug-in hybrid configurations will transition to an efficiency-focused Miller-cycle engine setup to reduce carbon emissions.

The second-generation XC60 entered global production in 2017 and received an initial update in 2021. Extending the lifecycle of the existing platform allows Volvo to offer traditional and hybrid powertrains as EV adoption rates fluctuate across global markets.

Pricing for the 2027 XC60 is expected to start near $52,000 when deliveries begin in early 2027. The model will continue to compete directly against luxury midsize rivals, including the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, and Lexus NX.
