The United States Patent and Trademark Office granted Motorola a patent for a wearable device that transforms from a wrist-worn smartwatch into a wide-screen handheld display.

The patent documentation describes a device built around a multi-segment flexible band that users can detach from the wrist, unfold, and reassemble side-by-side.

The patent text defines the primary invention title:

"Pivoting wearable reconfigurable screen"

Unlike traditional smartwatches that house a rigid screen on top of a strap, Motorola integrates a flexible display across the outer surface of the watch band itself.

When worn, the display wraps around the user's wrist like a standard fitness tracker.

To convert the wearable into a smartphone interface, the user unclasps the band and activates a built-in pivot mechanism.

The strap splits down its length and folds side-by-side.

Magnetic connectors or mechanical interlocking latches hold the two halves together.

This realignment produces a short, wide display format oriented horizontally for reading messages, viewing maps, or running application interfaces.

Three Functional Configurations

The patent outlines three distinct operational modes for the device.

  1. The device operates in wearable mode, displaying watch faces, health metrics, and instant notifications around the wrist.

  3. The bottom quarter of the unfolded frame bends into an "L" shape.

The Nubia Alpha remained locked in its wrist-curve shape and could not flatten or expand into a handheld screen.

Motorola's new mechanism addresses screen real estate constraints by reassembling the band into a broader surface.

Commercial production requires resolving several technical hurdles.

Flexible display panels must withstand repeated sharp twisting without creasing or degrading pixel performance.
