Should you drink Alkaline water? The Truth Revealed

The average adult human body is 60% water. It is in every cell of your body and helps to transfer nutrients into the cells while removing nutrients. Your body naturally expels water to remove the toxins, that is why you need to be regularly replenishing your water levels. It helps you to stay healthy.

However, not all water is created equal! The water that comes out of your faucet has been treated at the local water treatment facility. This removes debris and kills bacteria. What Is Alkaline Water?

Water is either acidic, pH neutral, or alkaline. These are defined by the pH scale which goes from 1 to 14. The lower the number the more acidic the water is, the higher, the more alkaline, and at 7 it is considered neutral.

While alkaline waters are 8 or 9. Pure water has a pH of 7, which is the same as your body.

What It Does To Your Body

People have suggested that consuming alkaline water will increase the alkaline levels in your body. However, research shows that it has very little effect. Your body is surprisingly good at maintaining a neutral pH level. This can be seen by the fact that the pH of your urine changes. The more alkaline water you drink the more alkaline your urine becomes.

In other words, your body passes the alkalinity through the system to maintain a healthy balance.

It is also worth noting that everything you eat and drink goes straight to your stomach. This is full of acid and effectively neutralizes any alkaline water.

There have been some studies that show alkaline water can reduce the production of pepsin. This is the enzyme that causes acid reflux. However, these studies have been done in the lab and not on humans, there is more work to do to confirm this.

Potential Issues

Your body is very good at dealing with changes and regulating the balance in your system. That is why alkaline water has no discernable effect on your body and there is little point in drinking it. In fact, you would be better to consume filtered water as this is closer to pure water.

You should also note that, if you consume alkaline water all the time, your body will have to work harder to maintain balance. This means an increased production of gastric juices and associated enzymes. This can be an issue if you have a kidney issue as your body may struggle to handle the alkaline water and minerals that will build up in your body. Check for more.
