Team building is often overlooked by businesses, especially in these tough economic times, but it doesn't have to be an expensive activity, and it doesn't have to take a lot of business or personal time to be successful. A few hours of fun with team-building activities can improve the company atmosphere and increase productivity. Employees will feel valued. That means working better and possibly even harder for everyone in the workplace.  So what team-building activities work well in most companies? We recommend activities that are fun and stress-free. Work stress is enough without adding any more. And your employees probably deserve a little time off. Of course, the type of event planned is highly dependent on the size of the company and the logistics required to get everyone together.

What do team-building companies offer? 

With corporate finances so tight, many companies are reluctant to consider using an outside team-building company to train their employees. Managers prefer to do the training itself to save money. What these otherwise-enlightened individuals don't realize is that taking this approach may end up spending more money. Especially if the employee base is large. Ineffective training costs more.

If the training is not effective, the company must repeat the concept in subsequent sessions. This requires additional resources in the form of classrooms, equipment, teaching materials, trainers, and work stoppages. Converting these aspects into dollars results in a very large number. If each retraining is not properly planned, it can bring a company out of business, and few companies can do that these days.  

To get things right the first time, some companies bring in professional trainers. The overall purpose of this job is to train and develop employees' soft skills. These individuals may also work with line managers and managers to provide training on operational roles. Still, coaches often have a fair amount of downtime, and their salaries eat into the company's expenses. If a company needs to wind down, such positions are usually the first to be removed. 

Another option is to contract an external provider for training on topics such as team building. Ultimately, this can be a lot cheaper than hiring a trainer. Certainly less expensive than training repeatedly because the first effort failed. Companies should consider this option as there are highly reputable training companies that offer team building and other soft skills training at an affordable price. 

Training comes in many forms, and good providers know that the approach that's right for their business is the best. When a company is in transition or growing rapidly, it often requires a multi-pronged approach. Concepts can be presented in the classroom and reinforced through practice. Experiential training is usually the most effective because people learn best by doing. Instructors align curriculum and practice with company strategy and provide development support as needed.
