Two-Year-Old Hairless Bulldog Petunia Wins 2025 “World’s Ugliest Dog” Crown

A hairless English-French bulldog mix named Petunia took top honors at the 2025 World’s Ugliest Dog contest on August 8 at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa, California. Representing Eugene, Oregon, and cared for by Luvable Dog Rescue, she won $5,000, a spot on limited-edition Mug Root Beer cans, and will feature on NBC’s Today show.
Petunia faced ten unusual competitors, including a Chinese Crested named Little Prince Wonder and a 13-year-old Chihuahua named Nezumi. The event highlighted the charm of unconventional pets and their capacity for affection.
Petunia’s journey began in a desperate rescue. She was saved from a breeder and hoarding situation in Las Vegas and received veterinary care in Oregon, including surgery to correct a breathing problem caused by an elongated palate. Contest organizers say the event affirms that pedigree does not define a dog’s worth.

On Today, Petunia’s handler Shannon Nyman explained that the bulldog receives daily treatment with coconut oil and sunscreen to care for her hairless skin. NBC’s Gadi Schwartz, a contest judge, described her as “a gentle soul who adores other dogs, cats and people.”
Nearly 50 years old, the World’s Ugliest Dog contest celebrates rescued and often overlooked dogs, promoting adoption and playful affirmation of their unique attributes. Past Oregon winners include last year’s Wild Thang, a Pekingese with distinctive fur and underbite.
Petunia’s win earned her more than a trophy. Her image will appear on themed merchandise like T-shirts, toys, and a Mug Root Beer can, making her a lovable symbol for pets in need of second chances.

The contest drew hundreds of attendees who cheered each contender’s story and appearance. The Associated Press ran a gallery of memorable snapshots that captured the light-hearted yet meaningful spirit of the event.
Petunia’s recognition affirms a commitment to animals often dismissed for appearances. Her story from rescue to recognition may inspire others to open their homes to pets who need love and a chance to shine.
