Perplexity AI Comet Browser Launched in India on Desktop (Available for Pre-Register on Android)

Perplexity has activated its AI browser, Comet, for Indian users on desktop platforms now, with an Android release preparing behind the scenes. Users on Windows and macOS who hold a Perplexity Pro subscription may begin using Comet from September 22, 2025. Android users can pre-register, but no public date yet for full availability. iOS support remains absent for the moment. However, CEO of Perplexity, Aravind Srinivas, posted this on X:

"Today we released comet to all Perplexity Pro subscribers in India"

Comet isn’t just another browser with search added. Perplexity has built its answer engine, already familiar to many users, into the browser’s core.

Among its features: an AI-powered sidebar assistant that stays operative across tabs, capable of handling tasks like comparing delivery speeds across multiple shopping sites, converting pages into emails, scheduling meetings, or making purchases via simple text prompts. These capabilities are directed toward users who expect tools to perform work rather than just display web pages.

Restricting access initially to Pro users gives Perplexity tighter control over feedback loops, bug discovery, and server load. It also establishes a premium tier value proposition. That said, users outside Pro have expressed impatience; wider access will be critical for Comet to scale.

Android pre-registration suggests Perplexity recognizes this; mobile reach will shape how Comet competes with entrenched browsers like Chrome or Safari.

A key risk: many browsers already embed AI/search tools or are moving toward deeper AI integrations. What will differentiate Comet is how reliably it delivers on its promises: speed and accuracy of agentic tasks, smoothness across devices, and data/privacy practices.

The extent to which Perplexity can align feature rollout with user expectations will determine whether Comet becomes a regular tool or a novelty. It’s a tight window.

For India, where smartphone usage dominates and Android holds a large share, the timing of the mobile rollout will affect adoption more than desktop availability.

Also, Pay, shopping, delivery networks, and localized services differ sharply here agentic features will need regional adaptation. Perplexity’s roadmap will likely need to address that.
