Doug Martin, Former NFL Running Back, Dies at 36

Former NFL running back Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning while in police custody in California, according to a Fox 11 news report, his family announced. He was 36 years old.
Martin’s death was confirmed via a statement from his family:
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Martin, nicknamed “Muscle Hamster,” starred at Boise State University from 2007-11 where he rushed for 3,431 yards and 43 touchdowns, ranking among the school’s top performers in multiple categories.
He was selected with the 31st overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his rookie season he rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns, plus 472 receiving yards.
Martin earned two Pro Bowl selections (2012, 2015) and a First-Team All-Pro nod in 2015, when he rushed for 1,402 yards and finished with 1,673 yards from scrimmage.
Over the course of his seven-season NFL career (six seasons with Tampa Bay followed by one with the Oakland Raiders), Martin compiled 5,356 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns.
The Buccaneers released a statement recognizing Martin’s contributions:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin… From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise. He was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa Bay…”

The cause of death remains unreported, and the family has asked for privacy as they deal with the loss.
