Labubu Movie: Screen Rights Secured by Sony Pictures

Studio Sony Pictures has obtained the screen rights for the toy brand Labubu and is developing a feature film based on the collectible figurines, according to multiple industry reports.
The film project, currently in early development, according to Reuters, has not yet announced a director, writer, cast, or chosen between live-action or animated formats.
Labubu was created in 2015 by Hong Kong-born illustrator Kasing Lung as part of his “The Monsters” series.
Production of the toy line began under How2Work, but its global reach expanded markedly after partnership with Chinese retailer Pop Mart in 2019.
The plastic-figurine line features the lead character Labubu and a group of “tribe” characters including Zimomo, Mokoko, Tycoco and Spooky.
The marketing model has emphasised the “blind box” format, where buyers purchase sealed boxes without knowing the exact character inside; this model has driven strong collector demand and secondary-market premiums.
Industry sources indicate that Pop Mart’s profits rose significantly in 2025 following the toy line’s global surge.
Celebrity endorsements have amplified Labubu’s visibility: stars such as Lisa of K-pop group BLACKPINK, Rihanna and David Beckham have been seen with Labubu-branded merchandise.
With Sony’s acquisition, the Labubu film enters a trend seen in recent years where toy brands move from shelf to screen. Studios now often seek to turn successful toy lines into cinematic franchises.
Neither Sony nor Pop Mart have released public statements confirming the development details. The project’s first public step will likely be announcement of key talent and a creative team.
