Apple has begun redesigning the successor to its iPhone Air smartphone and the company plans to equip the device with a second rear camera to address limitations in the current model.
The iPhone Air 2 could launch at a reduced price compared to the existing version's $999 starting point in the United States and the move comes as suppliers have scaled back production due to lower demand for the thin handset introduced in September.
The company canceled trial production of the second-generation model last month and the effort had been set for a fall 2026 debut under the internal codename V62.
Apple now aims for a spring 2027 rollout for the redesigned phone and trial manufacturing could resume as soon as March under the direction of supplier Luxshare in Kunshan, China.

The addition of another lens, expected to be an ultra-wide option, would join the 48-megapixel fusion camera on the back of the current iPhone Air, which offers telephoto-like 2x zoom but lacks broader photography features found in other models.
Apple introduced the first iPhone Air as its slimmest device yet at 5.6 millimeters thick and it includes a 6.5-inch display with ProMotion technology, an A19 Pro chip, an 18-megapixel front camera and a 3,149mAh battery.
"Apple had cancelled the trial production of the second-generation iPhone Air last month, originally planned for a fall 2026 launch... The company is now targeting a Spring 2027 release for the model," according to a report citing people working on the device at Apple and its suppliers.
The iPhone Air 2 forms part of Apple's broader lineup expansion and the company is developing at least eight new iPhones for release between 2026 and 2027.
