Kate Winslet recounted a drama teacher's advice to accept only "fat girl parts" as she pursued acting in her youth.
This beautiful British actress shared the anecdote during an interview on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs program while promoting her directorial debut, Goodbye June.
Winslet, 48, described signing with a child agent and facing body-related criticism at the time.
"I was a little bit stocky," she said, recalling the encounter with the teacher who delivered the remark.
She quoted the teacher directly:
"Well, darling, you’ll have a career if you’re ready to settle for the fat girl parts."
Winslet also mentioned that comments from teachers and schoolmates about her size led her to eat very little when she was 19 years old.
In response to the past advice, she added, "Look at me now. It’s appalling the things people say to children."
The actress has addressed similar experiences before, including a crew member's suggestion to hide her "belly rolls" during filming for the 2023 movie Lee and a 2003 dispute with GQ magazine over alleged digital alterations to her cover image.
