Meta Platforms rolled out a series of updates to its WhatsApp (the world's #1 encrypted messaging service) on Thursday, introducing a tool that lets users record voice or video notes directly after an unanswered call.

The missed call messages option sends the note with one tap, providing a way to convey information without waiting for a callback. “This new approach will make voicemails a thing of the past,” the company said in a blog post.

The update also enhances Meta AI image creation through integrations with Flux and Midjourney models, which improve generation quality for items such as holiday greetings shared in chats or status updates.

Users can now animate static photos into short videos via AI prompts, turning images into clips for use in conversations or status posts.

Group interactions received additions, including emoji reactions in voice chats that allow participants to respond without disrupting the flow.

“Voice chats help you quickly shift between messaging and talking live without ringing the whole group. Now you can react during a voice chat, so you can share a quick 'cheers!' without interrupting the conversation.”

Video calls in groups now feature an automated speaker spotlight, which highlights the active speaker to help track discussions.

On the desktop version, a new media tab organizes documents, links and shared files across chats.

Link previews have been refined to maintain conversation momentum.

Status updates gained new stickers with options for music lyrics and interactive questions that prompt responses from viewers.

Channels now support questions from administrators to engage followers in real time.
