The Ghost and Fairy type Pokémon from the Alola region became available at midnight local time on April 1 and remains catchable through wild spawns, field research encounters, and rewards tied to the event's GO Pass system.
The A Shockingly Good Time event launched on March 31 at 10 a.m. local time and runs through April 6 at 8 p.m. local time. Mimikyu appeared as a rare wild spawn throughout April 1 and can also appear in field research tasks.
Trainers reported higher encounter rates during the Pikachu Spotlight Hour on April 1 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. local time, where Mimikyu effectively gatecrashed the featured Electric type.
Players can also guarantee encounters by progressing through the free GO Pass track to rank 30, with an additional reward at rank 60. A paid GO Pass Deluxe option accelerates progress and unlocks extra rewards, though the base Mimikyu encounters are available without purchase.
In battle, Mimikyu mirrors its main-series Disguise ability. It enters encounters in its Disguised Form, which resembles a tattered Pikachu costume.
The first charged attack that connects deals no damage and triggers a switch to Busted Form, after which its Defense stat drops for the rest of the fight. Mimikyu's maximum Combat Power reaches 2516.
Its recommended moveset for most content includes Shadow Claw as the fast move paired with Play Rough as the charged move, though Hex, Shadow Sneak, and Thunder are also available.
It is weak to Ghost and Steel types and benefits from Fog or Cloudy weather boosts.
The official Pokémon website announcement described the addition directly.
"During this event, Mimikyu is creeping into Pokémon GO for the first time with a unique battle strategy—the Disguise Pokémon can protect itself from a Charged Attack once per battle, after which its Defense is lowered for the remainder of the battle."
It also noted the fitting theme: a Ghost and Fairy type that disguises itself as an Electric type to tie into the event's electric focus, which features boosted spawns of Pikachu, Chinchou, Dedenne, and Pawmi plus increased shiny rates for Pikachu, Chinchou, and Dedenne.
The event includes daily Spotlight Hours through April 6 and field research tasks that reward encounters with several Electric types, including a chance at Alolan Raichu.
Mimikyu does not evolve, is not available in raids or eggs, and its shiny form has not yet been released.

Community discussion on platforms such as Reddit and YouTube confirmed the debut timing and mechanics within hours of midnight spawns on April 1, aligning with earlier rumors that had circulated ahead of the April Fools window.
Many trainers had long anticipated the addition during a Halloween event, but the surprise placement on April 1 matched the Pokémon's lore of deceptive disguise.
Mimikyu encounters continue to appear through field research and GO Pass rewards for the remainder of the A Shockingly Good Time event through April 6.
