Sony Xperia 1 VIII leaked renders reveal square camera island in major design shift

Leaked renders of the Sony Xperia 1 VIII have surfaced showing a redesigned rear camera layout that replaces the vertical strip used on previous models with a square module housing three lenses and an LED flash.

The images first appeared on Weibo earlier this month via user Super_Freak_ and were traced to protective case manufacturers. They quickly spread to tech sites including Sumaho Digest and GSMArena.

The square camera island represents one of the most noticeable changes to the Xperia 1 series in years. It sits flush within a raised rectangular housing and includes small cutouts around the lenses that some initial observers speculated could accommodate microphones or autofocus aids.

Updated CAD-based renders published by GSMArena on April 7 further back the square layout while showing the front of the phone with its familiar thick top and bottom bezels intact and the selfie camera positioned inside the top bezel alongside stereo speakers.

Earlier leaks had floated a punch-hole front camera but the latest visuals point back to Sony's traditional approach.

Some online discussions have pointed out that the new rear camera arrangement echoes designs used on earlier flagships such as the OnePlus 10 Pro though the Xperia retains its signature tall 21:9 display ratio and side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The headphone jack also appears to remain in place on the renders.

Sony has offered no official comment on the images and the company has not published any press materials about the Xperia 1 VIII.

Accessory-based leaks like these typically provide an approximate view of the final hardware but often undergo tweaks before launch. A source close to the Vietnamese Xperia community told Sumaho Digest that the core camera module redesign aligns with what case makers are preparing though the overall design could still evolve.

Rumors tied to the renders suggest the phone will carry a triple 48-megapixel camera array with larger sensors on the main and telephoto units. The zoom lens in particular is expected to use a sensor noticeably bigger than the one in the Xperia 1 VII. Sony has not confirmed any specifications.

Development of the Xperia 1 VIII was first signaled in February when model numbers appeared in the IMEI database alongside those for the mid-range Xperia 10 VIII.

Both devices are slated for global availability in multiple markets though past patterns indicate North America may not be included. If Sony follows its recent schedule the flagship is likely to be unveiled in June.

The renders arrive as Sony prepares its 2026 flagship lineup following the Xperia 1 VII which maintained the brand's focus on photography tools and high-end audio but faced the same limited market share that has challenged the company for years.

The square camera module if finalized would give the Xperia 1 VIII a more contemporary look while preserving elements that have defined the line since the Xperia 1 II in 2020.
