World Quantum Day 2026 Events Underway Worldwide to Promote Quantum Science Awareness

April 14 marks World Quantum Day, an annual international observance dedicated to raising public awareness of quantum science and technology.

Organized as a decentralized initiative by researchers, the day features events in dozens of countries, from university lectures and lab tours to public demonstrations and industry webinars.

The official World Quantum Day site describes the 2026 edition as a continuation of momentum built during the United Nations-declared International Year of Quantum Science and Technology in 2025.

"Following the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, in 2026 we continue to celebrate the wonders of quantum science," the organizers state. "Join us on April 14 for World Quantum Day and be part of a global movement to discover, engage with, and share the groundbreaking advancements shaping our future."

The date April 14 was selected because 4.14 approximates the first three digits of Planck's constant, the fundamental value 4.1356677×10^{-15} eV⋅s that governs quantum mechanics.

Events scheduled for today and the surrounding period reflect the bottom-up structure of the observance. In Hanoi, Vietnam, participants gather for local programming focused on quantum education.

In Brno, Czechia, an afternoon session titled "Science Through Play" targets families and curious minds of all ages with hands-on experiments. Spain's ICFO research center in Castelldefels opens its facilities for visits, while Norway's NTNU in Trondheim hosts dedicated activities.

In the United States, George Mason University in Virginia runs a full-day program with keynote talks, panel discussions, student posters, and networking from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The University of Rhode Island schedules invited speakers from academia and industry for an afternoon event tied to its Quantum Computing Initiative. The University of Arizona plans a lecture by a Quantinuum representative followed by a faculty panel and reception.

HPE and NVIDIA are also streaming sessions, with NVIDIA's virtual Quantum Day featuring experts on accelerated computing and quantum error correction.

In Saudi Arabia, the Riyadh observance runs from April 7 to 16 at the King Salman Science Oasis, including panels on building a national quantum workforce.

Additional webinars organized by MDPI run throughout the day, covering quantum research topics.

World Quantum Day originated in 2021 when scientists from more than 65 countries launched the effort as a countdown to the first global celebration in 2022.

Activities have since expanded to include talks, exhibitions, laboratory tours, artistic projects, and interviews aimed at making quantum concepts accessible beyond specialist circles.

The day's events underscore ongoing efforts to connect quantum fundamentals with practical technologies already in use, such as those underpinning GPS, lasers, and medical imaging, while highlighting emerging applications in computing, sensing, and communication.
