Every trip deserves to be memorable, and every trip is organized with hard-earned savings, which should never go to waste on non-immaculate itineraries.
Why are itinerary details and sequencing a must?
As some of the locations in Egypt are not connected to water, cruising is available where you have water access on the River Nile. It's one of the most ancient rivers of the world, carrying enormous significance due to its history. Knowing about the details of the itinerary thus becomes crucial to save your cost and precious time.
Not only do details matter, but the sequencing also matters because you decide where to spend more time and where to spend less time, to make your trip memorable, covering maximum key locations, and minimizing wastage of time and costs.
How to save time and costs in an itinerary?
For saving costs, people usually prefer land instead of using air routes, especially if they plan to stay for more than 10 days in Egypt. One of the best pro-traveler tips is to bring mostly easy-to-carry luggage that can be moved from one place to another with convenience, and gives you the privilege to enjoy your trip to the fullest without any hassle.
Cruising is the most never to be missed out suggestion in any itinerary because you get a floating luxurious hotel experience surrounded by water that you will never forget.
What to experience in a 10–Day Egypt itinerary: Cairo, Nile Cruise & Red Sea?
Cruise ships move slowly and deliberately because they provide you with maximum exposure to the locations that are present near the River Nile.
On the other hand, Cairo has its own significance due to the famous Pyramids of Giza. Whereas, the Red Sea has its own significance where you enjoy luxurious hoteling with a beach experience that you will always remember. Having a planned 10-Day trip to these locations is a must-do thing on your bucket list.
Our Nile Cruise Vacation suggested itinerary.
Here’s our suggested itinerary so that you cover maximum locations perfectly without a worry or any regret. Nile Cruise Vacation is always there to serve you in the best possible way.
Day 1 – 2 cover Cairo, Days 3 – 8 cover the River Nile (Cruising), and Days 9 – 10 cover the Red Sea.
Day 1: Old Cairo Traditions & Historic Streets
- Route: Central Cairo / Fustat corridor.
- Sites to Visit: Coptic Cairo (Hanging Church, Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus) ➡ National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) ➡ Islamic Cairo & Khan El-Khalili Bazaar.
- Logistics: Land hotel check-in should be preferred. Use road vehicles to travel between these historic city sectors seamlessly.
- Integrated Hack: Our suggestion is to walk counter-clockwise through the NMEC Royal Mummies Hall to avoid moving behind large and slow-moving tour groups to save your time. Escape street-level bazaar sellers by going to rooftop cafes near El-Fishawy for birds-eye minaret photos. However, if you wish to visit bazaars, be mindful of the time and safety as well.
Day 2: The Evolution of Pyramids
- Route: Southwest desert plateau corridor.
- Sites to Visit: Giza Plateau (Great Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx) ➡ Saqqara Necropolis (Step Pyramid of Djoser, Pyramid of Unas).
- Logistics: There is a 45-minute drive south from Giza to reach Saqqara. Prefer a land hotel stay to take rest.
- Integrated Hack: You can skip the crowded official Sphinx viewing platform and use the Khafre Valley Temple exit ramp for a higher side-profile photo with the pyramid centered in your photographs. Preferably, enter the Pyramid of Unas between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM for perfect light beams on the pictographs for better visibility and photography.
Day 3: Grand Treasures & The Southbound Flight
- Route: Giza/Downtown Cairo to Aswan (Domestic Flight).
- Sites to Visit: The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) ➡ The Egyptian Museum (Tahrir Square) ➡ Flight to Aswan.
- Logistics: Store main luggage in the transit vehicle. As Cairo usually has heavy traffic jams, it's suggested to have a 4-hour departure window before the domestic flight.
- Integrated Hack: Split the day's spending plan strategically. Firstly, visit the GEM for the pleasantly mesmerizing architecture, atrium, and King Tutankhamun collections, then spend the afternoon viewing classical stone statues at the old Tahrir site before heading straight to the airport. B
Day 4: Ancient Engineering & Island Sanctuaries
- Route: Aswan regional loop ➡ Nile River Cruise Embarkation.
- Sites to Visit: The High Dam ➡ the Unfinished Obelisk ➡ Philae Temple.
- Logistics: Board the Nile Cruise vessel for lunch (it acts as your floating hotel). Use motorized wooden taxi boats to reach Philae Island.
- Integrated Hack: Our suggestion is to inform the cruise boat management before boarding that you require an additional 30-minute margin after your main tour. Walk to the western side of Philae Island for a quiet view of the reservoir.
Day 5: Desert Border Marvels & Crocodile Temples
- Route: Aswan to Abu Simbel overland ➡ downriver cruise sailing to Kom Ombo.
- Sites to Visit: Abu Simbel Temples (Ramesses II & Nefertari) ➡ Temple of Kom Ombo & the Crocodile Mummification Museum.
- Logistics: Our suggestion is to have an early 3:00 AM land trip to Abu Simbel (3 hours south of Aswan), return to the ship by noon to begin sailing. The cruise ship docks
Evenly at the banks right outside Kom Ombo.
- Integrated Hack: Bypass the massive over-crowd exiting Kom Ombo Temple. Walk around the backside of the structure near the Roman birth house to find a quiet side path leading straight towards the Crocodile Museum entrance.
Day 6: Falcon Deities & the Esna River Lock
- Route: Edfu Docking ➡ downriver sailing through the Esna Lock to Luxor.
- Sites to Visit: Temple of Edfu (Horus Temple).
- Logistics: Take a local horse-carriage (kalesh) from the ship to Edfu Temple. There can be waiting queues at the Esna Lock, where the ship is lowered mechanically.
- Integrated Hack: While waiting at the Esna Lock bottleneck, you will be mesmerized to watch the floating merchants in rowboats throwing textiles on the cruise decks. You can purchase textile products from these merchants, but you need to haggle firmly.
Day 7: The Royal Valley & Illuminated Temples
- Route: Luxor West Bank ➡ Luxor East Bank.
- Sites to Visit: Valley of the Kings (Tombs of Tutankhamun, Ramesses VI, Seti I) ➡ Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut ➡ Colossi of Memnon ➡ Luxor Temple at night.
- Logistics: Cross the river at 5:30 AM to beat the intense desert valley heat.
- Integrated Hack: Walk past the crowded tombs near the entrance of the Valley of the Kings and go straight towards the ones at the back first. Most people stop at the front, so the ones deeper inside are usually quieter and feel less rushed. Try to reach Luxor Temple about 30 minutes before sunset. You’ll notice the color of the stones slowly changing, and just as it gets darker, the lights come on, and everything starts glowing in a really beautiful way.
Day 8: Massive Monuments & the Desert Divide
- Route: Luxor East Bank ➡ Overland drive across the Eastern Desert to Hurghada.
- Sites Visited: Karnak Temple Complex ➡ The Eastern Desert Dunes (Stargazing) ➡ Hurghada Marina.
- Logistics: Check out of the cruise. 3.5 to 4-hour drive to the Red Sea. Resort hotel check-in.
- Integrated Hack: If the Karnak Temple Complex starts to feel too crowded, especially inside the Hypostyle Hall, just keep walking past the tall obelisks towards the back. Not many people go that far, and you’ll find the quieter “Botanical Room” of Thutmose III, where the carvings are quite different and worth taking a moment to notice.
Day 9: Protected Marine Reefs & Wreck Diving
- Route: Red Sea Coastal waters (Hurghada / Safaga sectors).
- Sites Visited: Giftun Island National Park (Orange Bay / Paradise Island) OR Utopia Island & Tobia Arbaa reefs ➡ The SS Thistlegorm Wreck (Advanced dive optional).
- Logistics: Stays are resort-based. Coastal marine trips operate via day yachts leaving from the marina.
- Integrated Hack: If you’re planning a trip to Giftun Island, try going on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Weekends tend to get really crowded because of incoming European charter flights, and it can take away from the whole experience.
Day 10: Mangrove Sanctuaries & Dawn Dunes
- Route: Hurghada/Marsa Alam coastal road ➡ Flight back to Cairo ➡ International Departure.
- Sites to Visit: Abu Dabbab Bay (Dugong/Turtle sanctuary) ➡ Eastern Desert Dunes (Sunrise Quad Bike Safari).
- Logistics: Sunrise desert trip at 5:30 AM. Internal flight from Hurghada (HRG) back to Cairo (CAI). Keep a strict 5-hour buffer time between flights.
- Integrated Hack: It also helps to bring your own snug-fitting swimming goggles and a light scarf. When multiple ATVs are moving together, the dust can get intense, and this makes the ride a lot more comfortable.
