Spirit Airlines says it is shutting down after failing to escape bankruptcy

Spirit Airlines says it has begun an “orderly wind-down” of operations and has canceled all flights after failing to put together a rescue plan that would allow it to emerge from bankruptcy as a viable airline.

In its statement on Saturday, the company said, “It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately.”

The short answer to why Spirit shut down is cash and restructuring failure.

Reuters reported that the carrier had already been through Chapter 11, had been trying to negotiate a restructuring plan with bondholders, and could not secure a deal that would keep it operating as a going concern.

Spirit’s own investor relations page says its parent filed for Chapter 11 protection on Aug. 29, 2025, and the company had previously announced a restructuring support agreement in March 2026 before the wind-down.

CEO Dave Davis said the airline had reached a bondholder agreement in March that “would have allowed us to emerge as a go-forward business,” but that plan did not hold.

He added, “For more than 30 years, Spirit Airlines has played a pioneering role in making travel more accessible and bringing people together while driving affordability across the industry.”

The broader collapse was tied to years of financial pressure, including weak demand, high fuel costs and the failure of earlier recovery efforts, Reuters reported.

The blocked JetBlue merger also removed one of Spirit’s most important escape routes, and federal officials said they were coordinating with other airlines to help stranded passengers and workers after the shutdown.

Spirit said all flights were canceled immediately and that customer service was no longer available.

The company told passengers to seek help through card issuers, travel insurance or the claims process now being handled by Spirit’s bankruptcy claims agent.
