Amazon Finalizes $35 Billion Tranche to Complete $50 Billion OpenAI Deal
Amazon completed the final $35 billion tranche of its $50 billion investment into OpenAI after the artificial intelligence developer met specified performance conditions. The transfer completes the funding agreement announced between the two companies.

The agreement split Amazon's $50 billion commitment into two distinct phases. Amazon provided an initial $15 billion cash injection at signing, holding back the remaining $35 billion until OpenAI reached product development milestones.
The money forms part of a larger $110 billion funding round for OpenAI that includes investments from Nvidia and SoftBank. That overall equity round valued OpenAI at $730 billion pre-money.
Amazon Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy explained the commercial expectations behind the capital allocation during a CNBC broadcast.
"We think they'll be one of the big winners in AI, we can help them grow, and we believe we'll earn a strong return for Amazon over the long term."
Alongside the equity investment, OpenAI expanded its computing agreement with Amazon Web Services. OpenAI committed to spend an extra $100 billion on AWS cloud infrastructure over an eight-year period, adding to its existing $38 billion contract.
OpenAI agreed to consume 2 gigawatts of computing power on Amazon's custom Trainium silicon. The deployment uses current Trainium3 processor clusters and next-generation Trainium4 processors scheduled for market release in 2027.
OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman commented on the hardware and infrastructure arrangement.
"Combining OpenAI's models with Amazon's infrastructure and global reach helps us put powerful AI into the hands of businesses and users at real scale."
Technical teams from both companies created a Stateful Runtime Environment available through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. The system lets developers build artificial intelligence applications that store context, preserve state across tasks, and run tools across enterprise databases.
AWS serves as the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier, a platform designed for businesses building and running software agents.
Microsoft issued a statement outlining its ongoing contractual rights with OpenAI. Microsoft noted that its revenue-sharing terms with OpenAI remain fully intact.
Microsoft confirmed that Microsoft Azure maintains exclusive hosting rights for stateless OpenAI Application Programming Interfaces. Stateless API calls originating from third-party services, including Amazon Bedrock, route directly through Azure cloud infrastructure.
Financial analysts at William Blair released a client note evaluating the financial structure of the expanded cloud contract.
The analysts calculated that $100 billion in additional cloud spend averages roughly $17 billion in annual revenue for Amazon Web Services. That figure represents approximately 11 percent of projected 2026 AWS total revenue.
Amazon software development teams plan to use custom OpenAI models inside consumer applications. These models will run alongside Amazon's proprietary Nova model family to service internal software projects.
