Marvel Drops First 'Avengers: Doomsday' Trailer As Tickets Go On Sale

Marvel Studios surprise-released the first public trailer for "Avengers: Doomsday" on Monday morning, triggering the immediate start of worldwide ticket sales.

The trailer provides the first extended footage of Robert Downey Jr. playing the villainous Doctor Doom.

Directing duo Anthony and Joe Russo return to lead the production, which brings together characters from three distinct film universes.

The newly released promotional footage features classic franchise characters reacting to the multiversal threat.

The studio paired the online footage drop with an announcement that ticket vendors opened advance sales for Infinity Vision-certified Premium Large Format theaters. Marvel schedules the theatrical release for December 18, 2026. This date positions the blockbuster directly against the debut of "Dune: Part Three".

The footage opens inside the X-Mansion, where Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Charles Xavier. The character watches a bright flash of light from a window and speaks the trailer's opening lines:

"Something's coming, something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we will be faced with an unthinkable decision,"

The clip depicts characters from the main Marvel franchise, the X-Men films, and the Fantastic Four colliding during a multiversal invasion led by Doctor Doom.

Viewers see Shang-Chi fighting Gambit, played by Channing Tatum, and Mystique transforming into Yelena Belova. The Thunderbolts team also intersects with the Fantastic Four inside a newly established watchtower.

The watchtower scene provides a direct connection to last year's Marvel release. The Thunderbolts appear in the exact outfits seen in their own recent post-credits scene, including David Harbour as Red Guardian wearing a modified suit and Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds in a dressing gown. The Russo brothers filmed this specific crossover sequence on the Doomsday set one month before the Thunderbolts movie debuted in theaters.

Chris Hemsworth's character, Thor, delivers a speech to the assembled factions regarding the scale of the impending conflict. According to the dialogue, the threat scares Thor more than any past enemy. Thor issues a direct warning to the heroes:

"Put aside your petty squabbles. Presume nothing except this: if you return, you will return as brothers and sisters. Mark my words: we are going to need a miracle,"

The miracle arrives when Chris Evans appears onscreen as Steve Rogers for the first time since the 2019 film "Avengers: Endgame". The character lifts Thor's hammer, prompting a shocked reaction from Thor. The trailer ends with a physical confrontation between Thor and Doctor Doom, showing Thor easily overpowered by the metal-faced villain.

Joe Russo stated that the creative team intended to establish a fresh narrative direction that does not rely heavily on previous franchise entries. The director explained the production strategy to reporters:

“This is starting over from scratch,”

He added that the creative team views the film as a return to "phase zero" for the studio.

Actor Ian McKellen confirmed his return as Magneto in the new film during a recent public appearance at the Piazza festival in Rome. McKellen shared specific instructions he received from the Russo brothers while filming an action sequence:

“they got me at one point to destroy New Jersey”

McKellen described the direction further:

“told me to look more furious: make it look as if you hate what you're destroying. So I stood there and I shouted: 'Mar-a-Lago!'”

The studio chose to hold back several major franchise characters from this initial preview. Neither Spider-Man nor Wolverine appear in the footage, though industry reports still project both characters to feature in the final theatrical cut.

This production represents a major financial push for Marvel Studios following recent lukewarm box office returns. Recent titles like "Thunderbolts," "Fantastic Four: First Steps," and "Captain America: Brave New World" achieved mediocre commercial results. The studio aims to replicate the ticket sales of 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," which earned nearly 2.8 billion dollars globally.

Robert Downey Jr. reportedly earns 100 million dollars for his portrayal of Doctor Doom across this film and its planned sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars". Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay for the movie. Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, and Jonathan Schwartz serve as producers.

Tom Holland's upcoming movie, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," will hit theaters on July 31. Theater chains expect to play the newly released "Avengers: Doomsday" trailer before screenings of the new Spider-Man film. Advance ticket sales continue through major online theatrical platforms ahead of the winter release date.
