Redmi Note 17 Series Launches With Large Displays And Massive Batteries

Xiaomi introduced the Redmi Note 17 series in China today, launching two smartphones equipped with unusually large batteries and displays. The lineup includes the standard Redmi Note 17 and the premium Redmi Note 17 Pro, both aiming to eliminate battery anxiety for heavy media consumers.

The standard Redmi Note 17 carries a massive 7-inch OLED panel, making it one of the largest conventional smartphones on the market. This screen features a 120Hz refresh rate, 1,080 by 2,396 pixel resolution, and 1,800 nits of peak brightness. The touchscreen can register inputs even if the user has wet hands or wears gloves.

To keep the giant display running, Xiaomi packed an 8,000mAh "Jinshajiang" battery inside the standard model. The manufacturer shared details on Weibo regarding the battery performance:

"The battery has an energy density of 821Wh/L and is rated for 1,600 charge cycles."

The standard phone runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 chipset and supports 45W wired charging alongside 22.5W reverse wired charging. It holds an IP65 rating for dust and splash protection. Corning Gorilla Glass 7i shields the display.

Buyers can choose between 6GB and 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, paired with 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. A hybrid dual-SIM slot allows users to add a microSD card for extra space, which is a feature missing on the Pro model.

The device carries a modest 50-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. On the design side, it features a plastic frame and comes in Meteor Purple, Light Aquamarine, and Black colorways.

The premium Redmi Note 17 Pro opts for a smaller 6.83-inch 12-bit OLED display, but offers a sharper 1.5K resolution and 3,500 nits peak brightness. It uses the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chipset and steps up protection with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and extensive IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings.

The Pro model comes with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage, utilizing faster UFS 3.1 speeds on the larger configurations. Unlike the standard edition, this model lacks a microSD slot for expansion.

Xiaomi paired the Pro model with an even larger 9,000mAh battery that supports 67W fast charging. Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing announced a free five-year battery upgrade program for early buyers of the Pro model in China.

According to the company's official announcement on Weibo, the warranty handles battery degradation systematically:

"If the phone's battery health drops below 80% in the first four years, the company will replace the battery for free. If the battery health drops below 80% in the fifth year, users can upgrade to a larger battery for free."

Reports indicate the fifth-year upgrade replaces the degraded cell with an even larger 10,000mAh battery. The Pro model also features a 50-megapixel main camera, stereo speakers, and an ultrasonic proximity sensor.

The standard model measures 169.70 by 79.14 by 8.26 millimeters and weighs 225 grams. The Pro model measures 163.45 by 78.27 by 8.46 millimeters and weighs 226 grams.

The standard Redmi Note 17 starts at 1,299 yuan, which is approximately 191 US dollars. The Pro version starts at 1,599 yuan, roughly equal to 235 US dollars.

Xiaomi has not yet announced pricing or launch dates for markets outside of China. Some hardware changes could occur when these devices release globally.
