Apple Refreshes Mac Lineup with 'Local AI Compute Kings' M6 and M5 Ultra
The updated Mac mini and Mac Studio shift focus toward on-device model execution, setting the stage for a new hardware battleground in physical AI infrastructure.

Apple unveiled its latest desktop computers on Tuesday, introducing a redesigned Mac mini featuring the new M6 processor alongside an updated Mac Studio powered by the high-end M5 Ultra chip. Both systems place local artificial intelligence workloads at the center of their architecture, marking a clear pivot in how hardware makers target developers and enterprises looking to run models on-device.
Pre-orders opened Tuesday through the company's online store, with retail availability and shipping scheduled for Sept. 22.
The updated Mac mini now starts at $899, a direct $100 increase over the previous base model, while the M5 Ultra Mac Studio carries a base price of $5,499.
Alongside the computer updates, Apple also added a $9 polishing cloth to its product catalog; yes, it's a real Apple product- we are not joking here.
According to details published in Apple’s official announcement, the M6 is manufactured on TSMC's 2-nanometer process node. The chip houses a 12-core CPU complex and a 12-core GPU, with Apple introducing dedicated Neural Accelerators into each individual graphics core.
Combined with a dual 16-core Neural Engine, Apple claims the entry desktop delivers up to four times the AI processing performance of earlier Mac mini models.
At the higher end of the range, the Mac Studio upgrades to the M5 Ultra. Built on a quad-die design, the chip scales up to a 36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU. Crucially for developers working with generative models, the machine supports up to 512GB of unified memory with 1.2 terabytes per second of memory bandwidth.
That memory capacity allows the machine to load and execute parameter-heavy open-weight models entirely on-device without handing tasks off to cloud servers.

It might look like a normal product update, but the real thing is different now:
Previous Mac updates focused primarily on traditional creative demands such as multi-stream 8K video editing or complex 3D rendering. This launch shifts direction toward establishing the desktop Mac as a dedicated, physical node for personal and enterprise AI compute.
By integrating matrix math hardware directly into the GPU cores and scaling unified memory to half a terabyte, Apple is framing these desktops as dedicated local AI appliances.
Running models directly on local hardware addresses persistent corporate concerns regarding cloud API costs, latency, and data privacy, allowing sensitive customer documents or internal agentic tasks to remain inside corporate network perimeters.
This shift is poised to spark a broader competitive race across the personal computer market. Rather than selling desktops merely as terminals connecting to remote cloud infrastructure, hardware manufacturers will now face pressure to build specialized, personal AI compute products to rival Apple's Local AI Compute Kings.
Apple's focused pivot signals that local hardware capable of hosting persistent, autonomous AI agents will be the primary arena for the next cycle of desktop competition.
The starting price increase on the Mac mini comes amid broader sector headwinds.
Recent industry-wide supply constraints and elevated pricing for high-bandwidth memory chips have impacted production costs across desktop computing lines.
Despite these cost pressures, demand for local inference hardware remains high.
As organizations seek to run autonomous agents and open-source models without ongoing cloud token fees, dedicated desktop nodes are increasingly viewed as a practical operational investment.
