Apple faces a major supply bottleneck six weeks before its planned product launch, as roughly $1 billion worth of A20 Pro processors sit uncompleted at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. facilities.

The delay stems from a global shortage of mobile dynamic random-access memory chips required for final assembly.

TSMC fabricates the A20 Pro on its 2-nanometer process node at Fab 3 in Longtan, Taiwan.

Production yield for the silicon itself remains high, but the final stage uses TSMC's Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging.

This packaging bonds mobile DRAM directly onto the main processor wafer. Without memory chips delivered to the packaging line, completed silicon wafers cannot move forward to device assembly plants.

Supply chain reporter Tim Culpan detailed the bottleneck after tracking production movements across Taiwan and mainland China.

"Apple and its assemblers remain confident that they can meet initial demand."

Apple CEO Tim Cook previously described memory cost shifts during earnings calls, saying the company faced:

"a hundred year flood"

Major memory manufacturers Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix shifted factory lines toward high-bandwidth memory and server-grade DRAM.

Demand from artificial intelligence data centers provides higher profit margins than mobile RAM for smartphones. Micron and its peers sold out memory capacity through 2027 under long-term supply agreements with server buyers.

To address the shortage, Apple sought alternative suppliers. The company opened negotiations with Chinese chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies to purchase lower-cost mobile DRAM.

Pricing talks broke down when ChangXin Memory Technologies refused to sell below rates charged by Samsung and SK Hynix. Apple also lobbied U.S. government officials for regulatory approval to import Chinese memory, as Washington considers potential trade restrictions against the firm.

Assembly partners Foxconn and BYD face shortened manufacturing schedules to build inventory reserves. The supply constraints directly affect the production pipeline for the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone Ultra. Apple projects total production of roughly 200 million units across the generation.

Distribution plans for opening weekend remain unchanged.

Retail stock and online fulfillment immediately following the initial launch window face severe delays if memory shipments do not accelerate.
