Google Expands Generative AI features Performance Tracking Tool in Search Console

Google has rolled out dedicated Generative AI performance reports inside Google Search Console, providing website owners direct visibility into how often their content appears inside artificial intelligence search features.

The report tracks organic impressions generated across Google Search AI features, including AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative elements in Google Discover. Initial testing began with select website managers in the United Kingdom before expanding to verified properties globally.

Website administrators access the data through a dedicated tab under the main Performance section in Search Console. The system measures performance using five specific dimensions: impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates.

Google confirmed the rollout details in official Search Console documentation.

"We're also starting to roll out new insights for website owners in Search Console about the appearance of their pages in generative AI Search features." — Google Search Console Documentation

The Pages tab identifies canonical URLs used by Google's systems to generate AI responses. The tool records one impression whenever a link to a site scrolls into view within an AI response or carousel. It counts multiple occurrences within the same session separately if they stem from distinct search cards or results.

The new performance dashboard excludes key traffic metrics that site operators traditionally rely on. Search Console does not record click-through counts or specific user search queries within this report.

A Google spokesperson addressed the exclusion of traffic numbers during early feedback requests.

Alongside the analytics dashboard, Google is testing direct site controls inside Search Console that allow publishers to block their content from appearing in AI responses. Turning on the blocking toggle prevents content from surfacing in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Google confirmed that opting out of AI responses stops all traffic and impressions from generative features. The opt-out setting does not alter standard web search rankings or traditional organic link placement.

The system limits data display to 1,000 rows in the table section, matching existing Search Console reporting limits. Data from active Search Labs experiments remains excluded from all generative AI reports.

Site managers can export chart and table metrics directly into downloadable files for external analysis. Google processes all date and time records in Pacific Time.
