Nikita Bier Steps Down as X Head of Product to Take Advisory Role

Nikita Bier announced his departure from his role as Head of Product at X. He will remain at the company as an advisor after leading product operations for just over one year.

Bier revealed the decision directly on X.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to pass the torch and demote myself to my natural state: a poster. I'll be stepping back from leading product for X and will continue on as an advisor."

Elon Musk hired Bier in mid-2025 to lead app updates and increase user growth.

Bier explained that the daily demands of managing the product division prompted his decision to step back from executive duties.

"X is, and will remain, the most important communication technology in history. But running this app is a 24/7 job and it's now time for me to take a breather."

Elon Musk publicly responded to the post, praising Bier's performance over the past year.

"Thanks for helping make this platform much better! You will be missed."

During his 400-day tenure as product chief, Bier managed the development of nearly 30 distinct products.

The engineering team updated core parts of the application, including the main timeline, notifications, onboarding flows, and the Android application.

Under Bier's direction, X launched X Chat, an encrypted messaging system inside the app.

His team also introduced profile features displaying an account's country of origin to identify off-shore accounts posing as domestic political commentators.

The product team enforced policies against engagement bait and unauthorized content reposting.

During this timeframe, the app managed scrutiny surrounding its Grok AI feature, which generated policy disputes over user image generation.

Data shared by Bier shows platform metric gains over the past 12 months.

"We continue to break records every month. We've climbed 70 spots in the App Store since this time last year."

He added context about the state of the company's product framework as he exits executive management.

"There's certainly much more work to be done, but our foundation is stronger than ever."

X has not named a single direct replacement to succeed Bier as Head of Product.

Management duties will transition across several team leads, including Benji Taylor on product design, Mridul Singhai on core product engineering, and Dinkin Flickaa on mobile engineering.

Before joining X in 2025, Bier built and sold two viral consumer networking applications.

Meta acquired his anonymous compliment app tbh in 2017, and Discord acquired his polling app Gas in 2023.

He also operates as a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners.
