Pluribus Season 2: Vince Gilligan Finishes Story Outline and Sets Filming Timeline
Script writers for the Apple TV drama Pluribus finished mapping out the story arc for the second season, clearing the way for production to begin this fall.
Series creator Vince Gilligan revealed the writing milestone during an interview on Deadline's Crew Call podcast, announcing that camera crews prepare to shoot in New Mexico in two months. The update provides the first concrete timeline for the production schedule since the drama completed its nine-episode first season.
Gilligan spoke alongside series composer Dave Porter on the podcast, explaining that the writing staff completed the story breakdown phase.
"I can't wait for people to see season 2, because we just finished breaking it, and we're going to start shooting it in a month—in a couple of months. And man I'm excited."
Production teams expect principal photography to last six months in Albuquerque, placing filming between September 2026 and early 2027. Visual effects creation and episode editing will require several additional months before finished episodes reach subscribers.
Asked about a targeted premiere window of late 2027, Gilligan deflected with humor. He joked that the new season will arrive "sometime in the 21st century." An autumn 2027 release window aligns with standard production schedules, arriving two years after the show's November 2025 debut.
Apple TV programming chief Matt Cherniss previously addressed release expectations in an interview with Variety, stating the show will miss the May 2027 Emmy eligibility cutoff.
"Vince [Gilligan] is really ambitious with Season 2, and really taking time to make sure that the show lives up to everyone's expectations. It too is a very complicated show when it comes to executing and shooting, so that would be tough for us to fit into that next cycle. But we're starting to see early drafts, and everyone's moving at a good pace. So excited to see that one come back,"
Pluribus stars Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, an Albuquerque author who remains uninfected after an alien virus merges the rest of human population into a unified hive mind. Season 1 focused on Carol fighting assimilation as the collective mind attempted to absorb her.
Executive producer Gordon Smith previously detailed the writer room pace during production discussions earlier this year.
"We are working as hard as we can and as fast as we can, which isn't very fast, but it is the best we can do,"
Gilligan stated on the podcast that he plans for Pluribus to span three or four seasons. He noted that his initial plan for Breaking Bad called for three seasons before narrative expansion pushed the story further.
Cast member Karolina Wydra, who plays Zosia, confirmed actors expect a return to Albuquerque sets this autumn. Apple TV ordered two seasons before the series premiere.
Crew members currently build sets and prepare equipment in New Mexico while writers turn broken story outlines into shooting scripts.
