Why People Buy Pro iPhones Just to Show Off?

I am using iPhone 12 Pro Max and its battery lasts no more than 4/5 hours now!
Its August 2026 and still, I am using it and I am really so worried about changing the model to the latest, like the iPhone 17 series or the most exciting iPhone 18 lineup.
At the same time, I can see many people who barely have enough to eat 3 times are holding the latest models without any hesitation and even keep them in their front pocket or right hand just to show off that they have got the latest model of Apple's iPhone.
Insane! Why would people do that? When they barely use the extra lenses?
Even some think that only one camera works and the rest are for show off! lol!
To figure it all out, I went to Reddit first:

Even though Apple itself markets these devices for high end professional photography and super-quality video capture, user discussions on Reddit reveal a completely different reality.
Actually, a large segment of buyers sees those three circular lenses on the back as less about optical zoom and more about a social signal, but many of them have an iPhone that’s actually 1 or 2 generations old (still Pro Max models).
Reading such posts for about two hours, it shows that there are some key drivers behind the "three-camera flex" of iPhones and here’s what I think people buy pro models for:
1. Instant Visual Recognition
A base-model iPhone looks relatively similar to older generations or standard entry-level phones from Android based phone makers like Samsung and Xiaomi.
However, the iconic triangular arrangement of the three-camera module on a Pro Max instantly identifies the device as a flagship "Pro" or "Pro Max" from Apple.

It creates an unmistakable visual signal from across the room, at a restaurant table, or in a mirror selfie that often Tiktokers do nowadays.
2. The Shift from Wealth to "Cool" Culture
In forums, especially among Gen Z and millennial users, people note that holding a high-end iPhone is no longer just about showing financial wealth but more about signaling fashion, trendiness, and social relevance.
Mostly, teenagers are into this and they even can go out of their limits just to buy a Pro model so that they can be relevant and recognizeable in their friends circle.
The three lenses have effectively become a luxury accessory, comparable to wearing branded streetwear or designer sneakers.
3. Peer Pressure and Avoiding "Negative Status"
In many online discussions, users express feeling an unspoken expectation to own a premium device; you can see this Reddit user who actually expressed his desire to buy an iPhone, find how much frustration he might have:

4. The Mirror Selfie Phenomenon
I did it to be honest and I still use that iPhone mirror selfie as my Whatsapp DP.
Social media culture on platforms like Instagram and TikTok thrives on such pictures and videos.
Mirror selfies are a staple of daily posting, and the back of the phone is front and center in every shot that makes a great Snapchat story.
Having three lenses prominently displayed in the frame acts as a passive badge of status without the person having to say a word.

5. Misaligned Value vs. Actual Usage
Interestingly, forum threads are filled with admissions from users who admit they rarely touch features like Apple ProRAW, 5x telephoto zoom, or advanced video modes.
For which the pro models are made for!
The majority use their $1,000+ device for social media, messaging, and basic point-and-shoot photos that any Android smartphone under $300 can do too and this proves that for many, the hardware choice is driven by external perception rather than technical need.
Its just letting others see that we own this device!
Although that was what I experienced and when I searched about the same the picture was same but in different colors!
How?
You will see many people will claim that they are using an old iPhone with 3 cameras but they need it, they will say that they get a bigger screen, more good looking UI and blah blah.
95% of the people will sugarcoat their claims just to again flex their abilities of buying a flagship device.
Ask them if they know what a telephoto camera is and where it is located in the iPhone Pro Max’s camera layout, and they will end up with no to wrong answers.
Still, that’s my personal opinion and consumer psychology maybe different in your country!
Just like in America and UK even kids own iPhones as they can just pay around $10 monthly to get a data plan for free with a latest iPhone.
That’s pretty much easy their parents to pay!
Wait, well, the next big shot of Apple is coming: a foldable iPhone is coming, and this may change the game for these show off people for sure.
