iPhone Duo May Become Apple's Biggest New Product Yet!

TLDR:

Apple has finally made a foldable iPhone. Seven years after Samsung introduced the Galaxy Fold, the iPhone Duo arrives with a nearly hidden crease, Touch ID and an under-display camera. None of those ideas are new on their own. Apple’s decision to package them into an iPhone may still make Duo the product to watch.

Apple has finally stepped into the foldable phone market, launching the iPhone Duo on September 9 as its first foldable iPhone.

But it's not the first time for everyone here, as Samsung got there first. The original Galaxy Fold was unveiled in February 2019, opening a new category around phones that could turn from a conventional handset into a larger tablet-style display.

Apple’s answer arrives years later and looks less interested in inventing the category than in cleaning up the parts people have complained about.

The iPhone Duo opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and closes around a 5.4-inch outer screen (just like a passport).

Apple says the inner panel has a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and make the fold crease harder to see. Both displays use the same aspect ratio, so content can scale between them without a jarring change in shape.

There is one correction worth making to the early description of the phone: the iPhone Duo absolutely has a hinge.

Apple calls it a precision hinge and says it contains more than 100 components. It supports the center of the display when the phone is open and works with an integrated magnet system to keep the device closed. Apple’s design goal is not a hinge-free foldable. It is a foldable where the hinge and crease are much less noticeable during everyday use.

That distinction matters because the Duo’s strongest selling point may be its refusal to make the folding mechanism the star of the phone.

iPhone Duo is bringing back Touch ID

Face ID is gone from the iPhone Duo.

Apple has put Touch ID into the side button, giving users fingerprint authentication whether the device is folded or open. The move is a little surprising on a 2026 iPhone, but it makes practical sense for a phone with two screens and multiple ways of holding it.

Touch ID itself is hardly new. Apple has used fingerprint authentication for years across earlier iPhones and other products.

The interesting part is where Apple has put it and why. A foldable can be awkward to unlock depending on which screen is being used, so having the sensor integrated into the side button gives Apple a familiar method without adding another visible cutout to either display.

The hidden camera is familiar technology too

Apple is also placing a FaceTime camera beneath the inner display, allowing the main folding screen to remain free of a conventional camera hole. Apple says the under-display camera stays hidden when it is not being used.

Again, this is not new technology.

Samsung introduced an under-display camera with the Galaxy Z Fold3 in 2021, and later Fold models kept the camera beneath the main display.

Even the Xiaomi Mix 4 came with an under-display camera!

That makes the iPhone Duo more interesting, not less. Apple is entering a category after other companies have spent years testing what works and what does not.

The company is betting that customers do not need a new idea every time. They need a version that feels finished.

The hardware is familiar, the package is not!

The iPhone Duo uses Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, a custom thermal system with a vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture. Its rear camera setup includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, with Apple adding foldable-specific shooting features that use both screens.

Apple is also reshaping iOS 27 for the two-screen format. Apps can adapt as the phone opens and closes, with multitasking designed around the larger inner display. Apple Pencil support is planned for later this year.

That may be the real Apple advantage.

Samsung created the hardware category. Other Android manufacturers have spent years experimenting with foldable designs, cameras, hinges and software. Apple now gets to enter with the benefit of that history and build the experience around an ecosystem that already includes iOS, AirPods, Apple Watch, iCloud and other services.

The price says Apple knows what it has

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the U.S. for 256GB and goes up to $3,199 for 2TB. Preorders start October 16, with retail availability beginning October 23.

That is an expensive phone, even by Apple standards.

It also tells us what Apple thinks the Duo is supposed to be. This is not being sold as a cheaper alternative to a normal iPhone. Apple is positioning it as its premium phone for people who want a large screen without carrying a tablet.

And that is where the foldable iPhone Duo starts to make sense.

In my view:

"Apple did not invent the foldable. It may have made the one people actually want to buy."

The most interesting thing about the iPhone Duo is how little of its pitch depends on novelty.

Foldable phones are not new. Touch ID is not new. Under-display cameras are not new. Even the idea of using a large folding screen for multitasking has been part of Samsung’s strategy since 2019.

Apple is taking those existing ideas and putting them into a product that looks and behaves like an iPhone first.

That could be enough.

For years, foldables have been sold partly on the wow factor of folding glass.

Apple’s pitch is much simpler: carry an iPhone that becomes a much bigger iPhone when you need it, without staring at an ugly crease or giving up the familiar parts of the iPhone experience.

For this, Apple used the dual-layer glass technique, and that is not a revolution in foldable hardware.

It may be a very smart product decision.

The best part I liked is that the Apple iPhone Duo is available in two new colors: star white and night sky and it looks great in these colors:

I might be late to share the news, but I was figuring out iPhone Duo and it somehow convinced me to sound like it's going to win Apple lovers once again.

My final take on the iPhone Duo:

iPhone Duo has a credible shot at becoming Apple’s number one new product story, even if it is not the most technically original foldable on the market. Apple is late, but late can work when a company enters a category with enough control over hardware, software and services to make the product feel like it belonged there all along.

Although I was expecting an iPhone Air successor too, but (maybe),  a foldable iPhone is worth the replacement.

However, Samsung opened the door in 2019 for foldable phones, and Apple has now decided the room is worth entering and just gave us the biggest-screen iPhone ever built.
