The remake is built on Unreal Engine 5 and promises to deliver high-definition visuals, updated cinematics, and modernised controls.

The campaign portion only is being remade and there will be no traditional multiplayer mode from the original game.

Key features announced include:

  • Three brand-new prequel missions that expand on the roles of the protagonist Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson.
  • Nine additional weapons drawn from across the Halo series (including the Energy Sword playable for the first time in the campaign) and the ability to hijack enemy vehicles such as the Wraith.
  • Co-operative play support: up to four-player online co-op across platforms, and two-player local split-screen on consoles.
  • Cross-play and shared progression between platforms.
  • A “Campaign Remix” mode that lets players revisit missions with gameplay modifiers (“Skulls”) for added challenge and variety.

On PlayStation Blog, they shared that:

What makes Halo special isn’t just the gameplay, it’s who you play it with... In Halo: Campaign Evolved, you can jump into four-player online co-op with friends or... now with cross-play and cross-progression across console and PC.

The appearance of Halo on PlayStation 5 is historic as this will be the first time a main-line Halo title is released on a PlayStation platform.

At the unveiling, Halo Studios community director Brian Jarrard stated:

“Halo is on PlayStation going forward, starting with Halo: Campaign Evolved.”

The game will launch on day-one for subscribers of Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and will also support Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Early previews have praised the remake’s fidelity to the original’s feel while modernising the controls and presentation.

For example, a preview by Windows Central highlighted smoother aiming and reloading mechanics and declared the remake played “far better” than prior iterations in some respects.

On the community side, some longtime Xbox users have voiced concerns about the decision to make Halo multiplatform, arguing it dilutes exclusivity.

Developers confirm that the original codebase and assets have been accessed to preserve the narrative and core design of Halo: Combat Evolved, while layering new systems and content on top.

Sprinting will be an optional mechanic, aimed at offering modern gameplay without abandoning the original’s tempo.

Although no exact date has been announced, the target release year is 2026 across all platforms.
