The service stores messages directly on the user's device and provides instant transcription in 12 regional languages, including:
- Hindi
- Bengali
- Marathi
- Tamil
- Telugu
- Kannada
- Malayalam
- Gujarati
- Nepali
- Punjabi
- Sanskrit
- and Urdu.
Users activate the feature through the app without carrier voicemail plans, dialing numbers or PINs, and it requires enabling call forwarding with the mobile operator.
The voicemail includes automatic spam protection, smart call categorization and adjustable playback speeds. Transcriptions appear in seconds, letting users read messages without listening to audio.
The feature is available to all users in India with the latest Truecaller app version, and premium subscribers have access to an upgraded version called Truecaller Assistant for custom greetings and advanced handling.
Truecaller plans a phased rollout to other countries after gathering feedback from the India launch.
Rishit Jhunjhunwala, CEO of Truecaller, said:
"Traditional voicemail was built for a very different era of communication. With Truecaller Voicemail, we are fundamentally rethinking how voice messages fit into everyday life -- making them free, device-native and seamlessly integrated into the calling experience. By enabling on-device storage, instant transcription, spam protection, and support for a wide range of Indian languages, we're removing the friction and limitations of legacy systems. This is a step toward building a more inclusive, intuitive, and trustworthy communication layer -- one that works the way people actually communicate today."
The company, which has over 450 million active users and blocked 56 billion unwanted calls in 2024, positions the feature as part of its efforts to combat spam and fraud.
