Tater Tots Recall Expanded to Nearly 650,000 Pounds Across 28 States

Federal health officials expanded a voluntary recall of frozen tater tots produced by McCain Foods USA Inc. to cover more than 21,600 cases totaling approximately 648,000 pounds.

Tater Tots were manufactured at the company's facility in Burley, Idaho, and distributed to food service accounts in 28 states.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted the updated enforcement report on Feb. 10 after the company initiated the action on Jan. 12.

The recall now includes 21,557 cases of Ore-Ida Tater Tots shaped potatoes under item number OIF00215A and 67 cases of Sonic Tots under item number SON00543.

Each case contains six 5-pound bags in clear, unlabeled poly packaging for a net weight of 30 pounds.

The affected products carry specific batch codes and use-by dates for the Ore-Ida line: batch codes 1005475084, 1005476076, 1005477012 and 1005498350 with use-by dates E 20271006, E 20271007, E 20271008 and E 20271103.

The Sonic Tots lot includes batch code 1005486334 and production code B 292 / 5.

McCain Foods USA Inc. recalled the items after detection of foreign material described by the FDA as "small hard plastic fragments."

The agency stated the products may contain "clear, hard plastic fragments," which could pose choking hazards or cause mouth and throat injuries if consumed.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported by any reputable news source.

The FDA classified both products as Class II recalls, indicating a moderate health risk.

The tater tots reached food service operators in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

The products were not sold in retail grocery stores.

The company, based in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, with the production site in Burley, Idaho, has worked with the FDA on the expansion of the recall list.
