X to Launch "Smart Cashtags" That Let Users Trade Stocks and Crypto Straight From Their Timelines
X is preparing to introduce Smart Cashtags, an upgrade to the platform's existing cashtag system that will allow users to buy and sell stocks and cryptocurrencies directly from posts in their timelines.

Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, confirmed the rollout in a post on the platform on February 14.
The feature builds on the current setup where users insert dollar signs before ticker symbols, such as $BTC for Bitcoin or $TSLA for Tesla shares, to create clickable references.
Under the new system, tapping those tags will pull up live price information, charts, discussions about the asset and, crucially, options to execute trades without switching to another application.
The launch is scheduled for the coming weeks as part of a broader set of updates aimed at deepening financial tools on the service.
X has been expanding its capabilities in payments and asset handling since rebranding from Twitter, with the goal of turning the app into a central hub for both social interaction and transactions.
Bier addressed the timing of the announcement amid discussions about how cryptocurrency projects interact with the platform.
He wrote in a reply on X:
"I genuinely want crypto to proliferate on X, but applications that create incentives to spam, raid, and harass random users is not the way. It meaningfully degrades the experience for millions of people — only to enrich a few people." In the same thread, he added, "And yes, we are launching a number of features in a couple weeks, including Smart Cashtags that will enable you to trade stocks and crypto directly from timeline."

The move coincides with changes to X's API policies that will restrict apps designed to generate fees from users who have not agreed to participate. Those adjustments target practices that have led to coordinated campaigns flooding replies with promotional content.
Smart Cashtags address longstanding issues with ticker symbols, particularly in cryptocurrency markets where the same shorthand can refer to different assets or smart contracts.
When a user encounters a cashtag in a post, the platform will display precise details tied to that specific token or security, including recent mentions and news from the teams involved.
Reports from multiple outlets, including Crypto Briefing and BeInCrypto, detailed the announcement and noted that the interactive panels will integrate real-time market data directly into the feed. Users will see price movements, volume figures and related conversations alongside the trading interface.
X has not disclosed the exact partners for trade execution, but the feature is expected to connect with established brokerage and crypto exchange services to handle the actual transactions.
The platform already supports some financial functions, such as peer-to-peer payments in select regions, and this addition aligns with those developments.
The rollout comes at a time when X continues to refine its moderation tools and content policies to balance openness with user experience.
Bier's comments underscored the company's intent to encourage legitimate financial activity while curbing mechanisms that prioritize short-term gains over platform health.
Details on the precise user interface and any account requirements for trading remain under wraps ahead of the launch.
