Apple Testing 200MP Camera Sensor for Future iPhone Models

Apple is evaluating a 200-megapixel image sensor for a future iPhone, according to a supply chain report published Thursday.
The tipster Digital Chat Station, who has a solid history with Apple product details, shared the information in a post on Weibo. The sensor measures 1 over 1.12 inch and matches the configuration used in the Oppo Find X9 Ultra.
"According to reliable supply-chain sources, Apple is also evaluating a 200MP 1/1.12-inch sensor—the same configuration as the Oppo Find X9 Ultra," the post states.

Current iPhone 17 Pro models rely on 48-megapixel sensors for the main, ultrawide, and telephoto lenses.
A 200-megapixel unit would deliver substantially higher resolution, allowing for greater detail retention during cropping and digital zoom without the heavy reliance on computational upscaling that Apple has favored in recent generations.
The larger physical sensor area, at roughly 93 square millimeters, would also improve light gathering compared with the 1 over 1.28-inch sensor in today's Pro models, potentially boosting low-light performance and reducing noise.
Reports differ on the sensor's intended position within the camera array.
Some interpretations, including those from MacRumors and 9to5Mac, suggest it could apply to the telephoto lens to enhance zoom capabilities in line with Oppo's dual-200MP setup.
Other outlets, such as GSMArena and Wccftech, cite the leaker's comments pointing toward the primary rear camera.
Either placement would represent Apple's first move into the 200-megapixel category that Samsung pioneered with the Galaxy S23 Ultra in 2023 and has maintained through subsequent flagships.
The timing remains uncertain.
The main tipster indicated the sensor could become commercially available next year, opening the door for a 2027 iPhone release.
That timeline marks an acceleration from January reporting by the same source, when the project was described as still in material evaluation without prototype integration, and from a Morgan Stanley research note that projected a 2028 debut.
Apple's iPhone 18 series, expected in September 2026, is instead focused on refinements to its existing 48-megapixel systems, including a variable aperture on the main lens for the Pro models.
No confirmation has come from Apple, which maintains its standard policy of not discussing unreleased products.
If the sensor reaches production, it would close a long-standing gap in raw hardware specifications between iPhones and leading Android devices while fitting into Apple's broader emphasis on image processing software to deliver final results.
