Sony PlayStation Store Reaches Settlement of $7.8 Million to Compensate Affected Users

Sony Interactive Entertainment has won preliminary approval for a $7.85 million settlement in a class action accusing the company of overcharging PlayStation customers after it stopped third-party retailers from selling game-specific vouchers in 2019.

The settlement would send the remaining funds to eligible users as PlayStation Network account credits, not cash, and the court says there are about 4.4 million eligible PSN accounts.

“Your rights may be affected by a proposed settlement in a class action lawsuit,” the official settlement notice says, and the court order adds that, “The Court GRANTS preliminary approval of the proposed settlement.”

The filing says Sony will not admit wrongdoing.

“THE COURT HAS NOT DECIDED WHETHER DEFENDANT VIOLATED ANY LAWS.”

The case covers people who bought certain digital games through the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023, where a game-specific voucher had been sold at retail before Sony ended third-party voucher sales.

According to the court, active PSN accounts will receive the credits automatically, with no claim form required, since Sony can identify eligible accounts through its own records.

Users with deactivated accounts will need to contact the settlement administrator and provide purchase information to receive the same value by mail.

The deal is the latest turn in a case that has already been rejected before.

In July, a federal judge declined an earlier proposed settlement, calling it inadequate, and asked the parties to come back with a revised agreement that better explained the value to users.

The current filing says the court previously denied two prior motions for preliminary approval before granting this version.

The settlement still needs final approval.

The fairness hearing is set for October 15, 2026, and users who want out of the class or want to object have until July 2, 2026.

The notice says the remainder of the fund, after legal fees and administration costs, will be divided among settlement class members’ PSN wallets, a structure that points to small individual credits once the money is spread across millions of accounts.
