Google Messages Finally Rolls Out Chat Themes (Custom Wallpapers Are Here)

In a long-awaited upgrade for Android users, Google is introducing Chat Themes to its Messages app, allowing users to personalize individual conversations with colors, preloaded wallpapers, and, most excitingly, their own custom photos as chat backgrounds.
The feature, spotted in the latest beta version of Google Messages (build messages.android_20260523_00_RC00), replaces the previous, more limited “Change colors” option in chat menus.
It brings Google’s default messaging app closer in personalization capabilities to competitors like WhatsApp and Samsung Messages.
What’s New in Chat Themes?
According to detailed reports from Android Authority and Android Police, the new Chat Themes menu offers:
- Color palettes: Users can still select from various color schemes for message bubbles and backgrounds.
- Preloaded wallpaper categories: Google provides themed collections including Cityscape, Art, Landscape, Space, Vibes, Textures, and Abstract designs.
- Custom photo upload: A prominent “Choose a photo” option lets users select any image from their Gallery to serve as a chat background.
- Reset to default: An easy way to revert changes if a wallpaper doesn’t work well with text readability.
The customization applies on a per-chat basis, making it ideal for distinguishing conversations with different contacts or groups.
Early previews show vibrant options, though testers note that some darker wallpapers can occasionally reduce text contrast at the top of the chat screen, which is an issue Google may refine before wider release.
Google Messages has supported basic color changes for RCS chats for some time, but the ability to set full wallpapers has been a frequent user request.
The groundwork appeared in April 2026 betas with code strings hinting at photo uploads and expanded theme controls.
Now, in late May betas, the feature appears functionally complete and ready for server-side activation.
This update is particularly timely as Samsung phases out its standalone Messages app, potentially encouraging more users to switch fully to Google’s solution without losing beloved customization features.
Availability and Rollout
The feature is currently in testing within the Google Messages beta program.
Google could enable it for beta testers at any moment via a server-side update, with a broader stable rollout expected in the coming weeks.
To try it early, you can follow these simple steps:
- Join the Google Messages beta program on the Play Store.
- Update to the latest beta build.
- Open a chat → Tap the three-dot menu → Look for “Chat Themes.”

Note that these visual customizations work best (and are officially supported) in RCS conversations.
Traditional SMS/MMS chats may have more limited support.
As personalization has become a key battleground in messaging apps, with iMessage on one side and WhatsApp’s growing theme support on the other, Google is enhancing the experience for its billions of RCS users.
Features like these make everyday texting feel more fun, intimate, and reflective of personal style, whether it’s a scenic photo for a travel buddy or a family snapshot for group chats with loved ones.
This might be a part of a larger push to make Google Messages the most compelling default Android messaging experience, especially as RCS continues expanding cross-platform compatibility with iOS.
