The software deployment arrives one week after the company distributed its third developer beta version on July 6.

This iOS 27 public beta gives an early look at the core software that will run Apple's next flagship hardware, which includes the unannounced iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new rumored folding phone (iPhone Fold).

Reports from Bloomberg indicate that Apple plans to announce these high-end devices during a media presentation in September 2026.

A primary focus of the software update involves systemic performance improvements across supported devices. The documentation states that the engineering team:

"spent significant time optimising core system functions, including memory usage, CPU utilisation, networking operations and display rendering, in order to improve the responsiveness of its operating systems across different platforms."

The updated operating system introduces a rebuilt virtual assistant named Siri AI, which uses a custom chatbot model developed with Google.

Users can activate the assistant by swiping down from the Dynamic Island or by pressing the side power button. This gesture launches a new input screen that completely replaces the traditional Spotlight search tool.

New Siri AI includes a standalone application that synchronizes past conversations across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac hardware via iCloud accounts.

The system integrates text generation and proofreading utilities directly into the assistant interface, providing system-wide access within text fields across different applications.

The assistant cannot be used in the European Union or China at launch due to ongoing regulatory reviews.

The update adds several modifications to the built-in Camera app, including a specialized Siri mode.

Users can point the camera at objects, physical locations, documents, or food items to ask the assistant descriptive questions. The camera tools can also scan paper bills to split group expenses through Apple Cash or provide immediate nutritional data about plates of food.

The native Photos application receives three new image manipulation tools driven by cloud-based processing.

The first tool, named Clean Up, deletes background distractions from complex scenes with higher quality infill than older iterations.

A separate Expand option allows users to stretch an image beyond its original boundaries by generating missing border content, and a Spatial Reframe tool alters the composition and perspective angle after the photo is captured.

Older devices gain a performance feature called CPU Scheduler, designed to make daily tasks feel faster on aging processors.

The complete operating system upgrade supports all models currently running the previous software edition, requiring at least an A13 Bionic chip and 3 gigabytes of memory.

The overhauled and advanced Siri AI and generation tools require an A17 Pro chip or newer with a minimum of 8 gigabytes of memory, restricting those options to the iPhone 15 Pro series and later models.

Analysis of supply chain schedules suggests that Apple will separate its upcoming hardware releases into two distinct periods.

The premium Pro phones and the new folding model will debut in mid-September 2026, with pre-orders beginning days after the keynote.

The standard iPhone 18, a budget-focused iPhone 18e, and a thin iPhone Air 2 will debut later during a separate spring launch window in 2027.

The September hardware event will likely coincide with a major transition in executive leadership at the technology firm.

CEO Tim Cook is expected to pass operational control of the company to John Ternus around the time of the keynote.

The upcoming autumn presentation will represent Ternus's first major product launch as the chief executive officer.
