Xiaomi to unveil the Xring O1 on May 22
Xiaomi is set to unveil its first in-house smartphone processor, the Xring O1, on May 22, marking a significant step in its pursuit of technological independence.
The chip, developed using TSMC’s second-generation 3-nanometer process (N3E), is expected to debut during the company’s 15th-anniversary event in Beijing. This move positions Xiaomi as the fourth global smartphone brand, after Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek, to achieve 3nm chip design capabilities.
The Xring O1 is anticipated to power Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi 15S Pro. Leaked benchmark scores suggest that the chip delivers performance on par with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Apple’s A18 Pro processors. The processor reportedly features a deca-core CPU configuration and an Immortalis-G925 GPU, indicating Xiaomi’s commitment to high-performance mobile computing.
According to Business Insider, Xiaomi’s investment in chip development is part of a broader 10-year strategy, with the company allocating approximately $6.9 billion (50 billion yuan) to semiconductor research and development.
As of April 2025, Xiaomi has invested over $1.9 billion and deployed 2,500 R&D staff to work on the Xring O1 system-on-a-chip (SoC). This initiative reflects a shift towards reducing reliance on external suppliers like Qualcomm and MediaTek.
The May 22 event is also expected to feature the launch of other products, including the Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra tablet and the company’s first electric SUV, the YU7. The Pad 7 Ultra is rumored to have a 14-inch LTPO display with 3.2K resolution and support for 120W fast charging.
The YU7 SUV is anticipated to challenge Tesla’s Model Y in the Chinese market, highlighting Xiaomi’s expansion into the electric vehicle sector.
Xiaomi’s foray into custom chip development and diversification into electric vehicles underscores its ambition to become a comprehensive technology company.
Xiaomi’s upcoming launch event will provide further insights into how Xiaomi plans to integrate these advancements into its product ecosystem.
