ChatGPT Go Lands in India at ₹399

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go exclusively in India on August 19, 2025 at ₹399 per month, designed to lower the barrier to advanced AI access for a highly cost-sensitive, high-volume market.
The all-new offering multiplies key usage limits: users receive ten times more messages, image generations, and file uploads compared to the free tier, and the memory span is doubled.
Nick Turley, vice-president and head of ChatGPT, summarized the upgrade clearly:
"We just launched ChatGPT Go in India, a new subscription tier that gives users in India more access to our most popular features: 10x higher message limits, 10x more image generations, 10x more file uploads, and 2x longer memory compared with our free tier. All for Rs. 399.".

Users benefit from local convenience too. The plan accepts UPI payments, removing obstacles for large swathes of Indian users who previously relied on card-based methods.
OpenAI has confirmed ChatGPT Go is geo-restricted to India for now, with plans to broaden its reach based on feedback.
This India-only tier positions between the existing Plus plan at ₹1,999 per month and the Pro plan at about ₹19,900 per month.
Prior statements from CEO Sam Altman underline India’s strategic importance.
He acknowledged it as OpenAI’s second-largest market, suggesting it could soon surpass the U.S., and casting Go plan as part of a localized strategy for monetization.
OpenAI’s own release notes make the rationale explicit as the Go plan expands core capabilities like GPT-5 access, image generation, file uploads, advanced data analysis, and longer memory to reach a wider Indian user base.
This launch suggests a turning point in how global AI platforms approach emerging markets. India’s massive, price-sensitive user base demands a differentiated plan, rather than one-size-fits-all global pricing.
ChatGPT Go plan illustrates OpenAI’s shift toward regional tailoring. Long-term impact hinges on adoption and whether this model influences competitors’ strategies.
OpenAI’s suite in India now spans:
- Free tier
- ChatGPT Go at ₹399/month
- ChatGPT Plus at ₹1,999/month
- ChatGPT Pro at ₹19,900/month
If feedback is positive, we may see Go or similar regional pricing models expand globally.
This signals a shift in how AI services like ChatGPT scale in diverse demographics, balancing affordability and advanced features with financial sustainability.
