Saudi Arabia announces world’s first “Sky Stadium” for 2034 FIFA World Cup

Saudi Arabia has officially announced plans to build a stadium suspended 350 metres (1,150 feet) above ground within its mega-project, The Line in Neom, positioning it as the world’s first “sky stadium” (also called the first floating stadium) and a venue for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The facility is reported to cost roughly USD 1 billion and will accommodate approximately 46,000 spectators.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and conclude by 2032, in advance of the tournament.
The announcement identifies the stadium as part of a broader plan to host the 2034 World Cup across multiple venues.
The first in the world “sky stadium” will be integrated into The Line’s mirrored, linear city structure and will rely fully on renewable energy sources for its operation.
Engineers and architects will face significant challenges, such as:
- Supporting the structure at 350 metres above the desert floor
- Delivering thousands of spectator seats
- Maintaining safety
- Easy access and comfort within a novel environment.
Netizens have raised questions regarding the feasibility, logistics, and timeline.
