ChatGPT Image Generation Not Working Today (Here's the Fix)

Many ChatGPT users say the image generator stops working or fails to produce results today. Complaints appear on Reddit forums, OpenAI community boards, and other sites.

Users describe prompts that start processing but end without an image, or they see error messages like "image generation failed."

I tried creating an infographic using ChatGPT's image generator, and it turns out that it's actually not working at all.

Here's what I see:

It first kept generating the image:

ChatGPT Image Generation Not Working

After waiting for more than 10 minutes, I decided to refresh the tab, and here's what I saw:

ChatGPT Image Generator Not Working

And then the 3rd error showed like this (even though my internet is working perfectly):

ChatGPT Image Generation Not Working

So this confirms that the issue is real and ChatGPT image generator feature is actually not working today.

The issues affect both the web version and mobile app, as some Plus subscribers report silent failures where the system tries to generate but shows nothing. Others note the problem comes and goes, sometimes after a few successful attempts, but not in my case.

I checked with OpenAI's status page, which shows strong overall uptime for ChatGPT at 99.82%. No broad outage hits the image tools right now. The company lists degraded performance only for FedRAMP workspaces and API organizations, which it continues to investigate.

Downdetector and similar trackers report no spike in problems for OpenAI services in the last day. Past incidents, including image generation errors, have occurred before, often tied to high demand, account-level issues, app bugs, service outage, or backend updates, and this also looks like that.

However, I have found some possible fixes for this:

Common Fixes

ChatGPT community members suggest several steps like switching to GPT-4o or another compatible model before requesting an image helps some people and some recommend refreshing the chat, starting a new conversation, or logging out and back in.

Clearing browser cache or reinstalling the app resolves the issue for a few users (but not for me at all).

One Reddit commenter said deleting and reinstalling the app produced two images before the problem returned again.

OpenAI forums point to settings under "Customize ChatGPT" where users can check if DALL-E or image generation remains enabled.

Using the right model matters, as some reasoning models like o1 do not support image output.

The best fix is this:

Go and switch to alternatives like Gemini, Grok, or Meta AI when ChatGPT image generation fails. This is the only working solutions for now.

If you are not satisfied with the above tools, you can go with direct DALL-E access or other platforms during outages.

Other traditional tech fixes may not help. Yes, I am talking about methods like:

  1. Starting new chats in ChatGPT
  2. Closing and reopening the app
  3. Deleting and reinstalling the app
  4. Trying different prompts (removing and replacing restricted words)
  5. Switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks
  6. Going to flight mode and then switching back
  7. Waiting and trying again in an hour
  8. Trying a different browser
  9. Trying a different device

As OpenAI continues to update its image models and deprecate older ones, developers face migrations as the company phases out earlier versions through the end of 2026.

Users who run into problems can check status.openai.com for updates or try the troubleshooting steps shared in the community and here in our guide.

Reports of this issue continue to appear across platforms as of June 20, 2026.
