United Airlines Relax Row seats to launch in 2027

United Airlines on March 24 unveiled the United Relax Row, a new seating configuration that allows three adjacent seats in the United Economy cabin to transform into a couch-style lie-flat surface after takeoff.

The product targets passengers on international long-haul routes seeking additional space without moving up to premium economy or business class.

The seats feature individually adjustable leg rests that fold upward at a 90-degree angle, creating a wider flat area suitable for sleeping, stretching out or watching entertainment.

Each Relax Row will come with a custom-fitted mattress pad, a specially sized plush blanket and two extra pillows.

Families traveling with small children will also receive a stuffed plush toy and a Children's Travel Kit developed with Sesame Street.

The new rows will sit between the standard United Economy and United Premium Plus sections.

United plans to install up to 12 Relax Row sections on each eligible aircraft, though the average number per plane once fully rolled out will be lower.

The option will debut in 2027 on select Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 widebody aircraft, with availability expanding to more than 200 such planes across the fleet by 2030.

United is the first North American airline to introduce this type of seating product and holds exclusivity on the specific design in the region.

The carrier positioned the Relax Row as an option for families with small children, solo travelers and couples who prefer the base economy fare but want more room to rest.

Andrew Nocella, United's executive vice president and chief commercial officer, said in the company's official announcement:

"As a leading premium airline, we're committed to delivering new, industry-leading experiences for all of our customers – and the United Relax Row is the perfect example of that,"

He added: "Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them."

United has not yet disclosed pricing or exact booking procedures for the Relax Row, nor has it specified which long-haul routes will offer it first.

Those details are expected closer to the 2027 launch.

The announcement aligns with the airline's broader push to differentiate its economy product on international flights through targeted comfort upgrades while maintaining lower fares than premium cabins.
