Among the identified molecules are sulfur- and nitrogen-bearing compounds, including some that resemble chemical precursors associated with DNA on Earth.

Researchers also detected aromatic compounds such as benzothiophene, along with other complex structures rarely preserved under Mars’ harsh surface conditions.

NASA described the result as the “greatest diversity of organic molecules ever found on Mars,” pointing to the planet’s ability to preserve fragile chemical signatures despite billions of years of radiation exposure.

Scientists stress that organic molecules alone do not indicate life. These compounds can form through non-biological processes, including chemical reactions between water and rock or delivery via meteorites.

“To be clear, we have not found evidence for life with this study,” Williams said, emphasizing that the results instead refine understanding of the building blocks that existed on early Mars.

At the same time, the findings deepen a long-running puzzle.

Earlier NASA research suggested that known non-biological mechanisms may not fully explain the abundance of organics detected in some Martian samples, leaving open the possibility that additional processes, including biological ones, could have contributed.

Why this discovery matters for Mars exploration

The new data strengthens the case that ancient Mars had the chemical conditions necessary for life, even if direct evidence remains elusive. The preservation of complex organics in clay-rich sediment also suggests that similar or better-preserved materials could exist beneath the surface, shielded from radiation.

Scientists say bringing Martian rocks back to Earth remains the most reliable way to determine whether these organic compounds are linked to past life.

For now, Curiosity’s latest findings expand the inventory of Martian chemistry and reinforce a central conclusion guiding planetary science: Mars once had the ingredients required for life, but whether those ingredients ever formed living systems remains an open question.
