British Airways Taxi Pilots to Get $100K Annually for Taxiing Planes at O'Hare

British Airways is advertising a Chicago-based “ground taxi pilot” role that pays $90,000 to $100,000 a year and asks experienced Boeing 777 and 787 pilots to move widebody jets between terminals at O’Hare rather than fly them.
The airline’s career page says the position is for “ground taxi operations at Chicago O’Hare Airport” and that the selected pilot will serve as Pilot in Command or Second Pilot.
The job listing says the purpose is operational, not promotional.
British Airways says the pilot will:
“play a critical role in helping achieve On Time Performance by safely ground taxiing British Airways Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft between terminals at Chicago O'hare airport.”
It also says applicants should have recent experience operating the 777 or 787 as a Captain or First Officer, along with a strong safety record and familiarity with O’Hare procedures.
O’Hare’s terminal layout helps explain why the role exists.
Chicago’s airport says Terminal 5 is separated from Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and passengers connecting between Terminal 5 and the other terminals use the Airport Transit System or terminal transfer bus rather than a pedestrian connection.
The airport’s official transfer pages also say Terminal 5 is the arrival point for international travelers and that passengers connecting onward may need to move between Terminal 5 and the domestic terminals.
The job is unusual because it turns a captain-level flying skill set into a ground-operations role, but the listing makes clear that the work is still tied to aircraft handling and safety, not apron towing or cabin service.
British Airways has not said publicly whether the role is a temporary fix, a permanent Chicago assignment, or part of a wider station staffing plan, and the posting on its careers site remains live.
