The service allows users to open deposit accounts, make peer-to-peer payments using account handles, pay bills, and execute wire transfers directly inside the app.
Users can also mail physical checks and set up direct deposit to receive paychecks up to two days early.
Subscribers receive a Visa debit card called the X Card, which supports Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The card offers 3% cash back on eligible purchases, fee-free ATM withdrawals, and zero foreign transaction fees.

X does not hold a banking license.
Cross River Bank, an FDIC-insured lender based in New Jersey, holds customer funds and provides coverage up to $250,000 per depositor.
Cross River Bank described the launch as:
"the first government-insured banking platform in the United States built on a social network."
An optional cash sweep program distributes account balances across a network of partner financial institutions.
The setup extends aggregate pass-through FDIC coverage up to $10 million per user under specific failure conditions.
The platform processes traditional fiat currency.
The current release excludes Bitcoin, Dogecoin, or stablecoin payments, though lead designers stated they remain open to adding digital asset features later.
X Payments LLC holds money transmitter approvals in 41 states and Washington, D.C. State regulatory agencies in New York and Massachusetts continue reviewing company applications.
Federal lawmakers raised concerns regarding yield rates and underlying banking partners. Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a formal inquiry to company leadership asking how X Money would:
"generate revenue sufficient to pay that yield."
Warren referenced past FDIC enforcement actions against Cross River Bank in 2018 and 2023 and questioned the safety of customer funds.
Visa provides transaction processing and debit card rails under an agreement established in early 2025.
Security settings rely on device passkeys instead of traditional passwords, allowing users to select individual spending limits and verification thresholds.
Internal testing began in February 2026 before head of X Money Dhruv Batura expanded access to select high-tier subscribers.
Owner Elon Musk outlined plans for embedded payments in a 2022 pitch to investors, aiming to build an app combining social media, messaging, and daily payments.
