Apple Restores Telegram to App Store After Brief Global Removal
Apple briefly removed the messaging application Telegram from its App Store worldwide on Monday night, August 3, 2026. The app vanished from search results around 9:30 p.m. Eastern time before returning to the platform approximately 40 minutes later.
Apple confirmed the temporary action stemmed from policy violations regarding illegal content uploaded by a user. Company officials verified the removal occurred directly after a content review identified child sexual abuse material hosted on the network.
"We briefly removed Telegram from the App Store after our review found content that violates our strict guidelines prohibiting child sexual abuse material," Apple said in an official statement provided to AppleInsider.
"The app was subsequently restored after the developer promptly removed the content and banned the user who posted it," Apple added.
Telegram developers erased the flagged material and issued a permanent ban against the account holder responsible for the upload.
Following that removal, Apple restored the listing, making the app downloadable to iOS users once again.
"Telegram has been restored on the App Store and should soon be available again for all users," Telegram stated in response to an inquiry from Anadolu Agency.
Telegram also confirmed to Reuters that the temporary suspension followed a content norms violation by a single user. The platform's dedicated App Store page returned to active status, making direct search and downloads functional globally.
During the 40-minute outage, users searching for Telegram in the App Store encountered empty search pages or error notices. Devices with Telegram already installed maintained full functionality throughout the event, allowing existing users to send messages without interruption.

However, financial markets reacted immediately to the store disruption as the data from CoinMarketCap showed GRAM, the cryptocurrency connected to the Telegram network, dropped 5.77% to $1.33 during the app's removal.
Prices stabilized as search listings reappeared.
Apple enforces strict moderation rules requiring third-party messaging apps to actively screen and filter prohibited material. Platforms must maintain reporting mechanisms for abusive posts and remove account holders who break rules.
This incident mirrors a similar action from February 2018, when Apple pulled Telegram and Telegram X from the store over inappropriate content concerns. Telegram updated its moderation protections at that time before Apple approved the application for return.
Telegram currently operates with hundreds of millions of active users globally across its cross-platform network. Apple and Telegram completed the resolution process within an hour of the initial takedown, restoring full download access across all regions.
