Broadway Actress Maya Boyd Cast as Storm in MCU X-Men Reboot

Marvel Studios selected Broadway actress Maya Boyd to play Ororo Munroe, the weather-controlling mutant known as Storm, in its upcoming X-Men reboot. Studio president Kevin Feige introduced Boyd on stage at the D23 presentation in Anaheim, California.

The casting decision makes this project Boyd's feature film debut. She assumes the MCU role of a character previously portrayed by Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp across 20th Century Fox's earlier movie franchise.

Who is Maya Boyd?

Maya Boyd is a 23-year-old rising stage and screen actress making her major movie debut as the weather-controlling mutant Storm (Ororo Munroe) in Marvel Studios' upcoming [X-Men] reboot, which is scheduled for release on May 5, 2028.

Boyd built her career on the theater stage after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre from the University of Michigan.

She performed in Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway and starred as Juliet Capulet in the Broadway production of & Juliet.

Speaking to Playbill about managing demanding stage schedules, Boyd described her focus on physical endurance during long performance runs.

"Prioritizing health is key to sustaining a long run."

The casting announcement establishes the core team for Marvel's first dedicated X-Men film produced inside Disney. Disney acquired the screen rights to the characters when it purchased 21st Century Fox in 2019.

Boyd shares the screen with an ensemble that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost. Christopher Abbott will portray Professor Charles Xavier. Inde Navarrette plays Rogue.

Adam Driver joins the project as the villainous geneticist Nathaniel Milbury, known in comic history as Mister Sinister. Driver addressed the audience through a video message sent from Pinewood Studios.

"When Kevin told me to show up for X-Men, I assumed he meant on set. So instead of being there in California, I'm here at Pinewood on this very lonely soundstage. Kevin and I have been talking for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And I think we finally found the perfect film at the perfect time."

Director Jake Schreier directs the reboot following his work on Marvel's Thunderbolts. Screenwriters Lee Sung Jin and Joana Calo wrote the screenplay from a story developed by Michael Lesslie.

In Marvel Comics, Storm is an Omega-level mutant who controls weather and atmospheric pressure. The character has led the X-Men in numerous storylines and served as ruler of Wakanda in core comic arcs.

Marvel Studios set the film's theatrical release date for May 5, 2028. The project follows scheduled multiverse storylines in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Production schedules for the project will take place inside Pinewood Studios ahead of the planned 2028 release calendar.
