Google Gemini App Reaches 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced on August 11, 2026, that Google's Gemini application passed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the fastest-growing product in company history.

The application joins 13 other Google services that crossed the 1 billion user threshold, including Google Search, Gmail, Android, Google Maps, Google Chrome, Google Play, YouTube, and Google Translate.

Pichai posted the announcement on X, naming Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, the Gemini app, and AI Studio, alongside the product engineering teams.

"1B+ people are now using @Geminiapp every month to spark new ideas and get things done. It's our fastest growing product ever, and our 14th to hit the 1B-user mark." Sundar Pichai wrote.

The 1 billion metric applies strictly to the standalone Gemini application on mobile and desktop platforms. The count excludes users accessing artificial intelligence features embedded inside other Google products.

Google reported that Search AI Overviews serves 2.5 billion monthly active users, whereas Search AI Mode operates with 1 billion monthly users in separate tallies.

Company tracking records steady user expansion since 2025. Google reported 400 million monthly active users at its developer conference in May 2025.

Internal figures reached 650 million in October 2025, 750 million in February 2026, and 900 million at the May 2026 developer event.

Alphabet reported 950 million monthly active users in its second-quarter earnings report on July 22, 2026, before adding 50 million users over the following three weeks.

The growth rate places Gemini alongside OpenAI's ChatGPT, which hit 1 billion monthly active users in June 2026. Gmail required 14 years after its launch to reach the same audience size.

Google published user interaction data alongside the milestone disclosure.

Sixty-three percent of active users interact with the application using voice inputs rather than typed text.

Parents rely on voice functions for daily queries at a 43% higher rate than users without children.

One in five Gemini Live sessions includes live camera video feeds or screen sharing to assist users in real-time tasks.

Students submit 38% of academic-related prompts with document or image attachments.

The application generates more than 150 million images per day for personal and commercial requests.

• On Apple devices, the application holds over 100 million active users on iOS, with macOS application users submitting prompts twice as frequently as users on other operating systems.
• On Android, Gemini automates workflows across more than 40 native and third-party applications, executing tasks such as booking transit rides and reserving restaurant tables.

Google stated that Gemini Live will expand voice capabilities by adding more than 60 regional dialects in the coming weeks.

The underlying model architecture has shifted since its initial release as Bard, which ran on LaMDA technology.

Google transitioned the service through PaLM 2 before deploying native multimodal Gemini models capable of processing text, video, audio, and code simultaneously.

Google disclosures show 13 million developers build tools using Gemini models, with enterprise adoption reaching 8 million paid seats across 2,800 organizations.
