Google Opens First Local Office in Pakistan

Ten years of digital groundwork in Pakistan culminated today in a formal ceremony inside the nation's capital. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and a corporate delegation jointly unveiled the inaugural plaque for Google’s first official office in Islamabad.

The corporate facility sits directly in Islamabad (capital city of Pakistan), serving as the central hub for Google's operational teams, policy division, and local program managers.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with a nine-member Google delegation led by Wilson White, Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy. US Chargé d'Affaires Natalie Baker also attended the unveiling alongside senior government officials.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai did not travel to Pakistan for the opening. Google sent Vice President Wilson White to head the executive group, adhering to standard corporate procedures in which global public policy leaders manage direct country-office launches.

During the meeting at the Prime Minister's Office, corporate executives and government ministers discussed expanding technical training programs and local hardware production.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Wilson White detailed the tech firm's past economic footprint and shared aligned goals with the state.

"Google has been investing in and committed to Pakistan for over a decade and to be able to reach this milestone where we're opening a local office, I think is a very special moment. Honorable Prime Minister, your ambition of making Pakistan a $30 billion IT export hub very much aligns with the goals that we have at Google." Wilson said.

The technology company shared specific financial metrics regarding its presence in the country.

"Over the past 10 years, we have contributed to more than Rs3.9 trillion of economic activity for local Pakistani businesses as well as households in Pakistan, contributing to over 960,000 jobs, and this is just the beginning." Wilson added.

The establishment of the Islamabad office ties into ongoing hardware production in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

Google collaborates with local partner Tech Valley, the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation, and Allied to operate an assembly line in Haripur.

The Haripur facility targets an annual output of 500,000 to 600,000 Google Chromebook devices. Officials plan to supply local schools and export manufactured units to nearby international markets.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif outlined the state's broader program, titled "Digital Nation Pakistan," which aims to digitize governance and economic systems.

The Prime Minister stated that local hardware assembly reduces costs for citizens and preserves foreign currency reserves. Government initiatives focus on upskilling thousands of young adults in artificial intelligence, software design, and gaming.

With the Islamabad office operational, Google plans to expand specialized technology labs across Pakistani universities and scale up direct certified training courses.

The exact location of Google's first office in Pakistan and its size are currently not confirmed, as no official announcement by either the Pakistan government or Google has shared any information about these.
