OpenAI Launches Dedicated ChatGPT Version for Teenagers Globally
Teenagers across middle and high schools have spent years using standard ChatGPT accounts to write essays, complete homework assignments, and ask personal questions.
Today, OpenAI released a dedicated version of ChatGPT built specifically for users aged 13 to 17.

The product rollout introduces age-tailored safety guardrails, parental account linking options, and tools that change how the system answers schoolwork queries.
Under the new setup, the software applies strict limits on content connected to self-harm, suicide, sexual roleplay, romantic interactions, and body image issues.
The platform also blocks the model from claiming it possesses human feelings or consciousness.
Ann O'Leary, vice president of global policy at OpenAI, detailed the target balance for the software:
“We want to treat teens like teens, which means that we have to make sure that we're showing up with the right developmental stage when we're not either talking down to them or treating them like kids, but we're also making sure that they're not exposed to material that they shouldn't be exposed to,”
The system alters how it handles academic prompts through a feature called Study Mode.
Instead of writing complete essays or giving direct math answers, the program provides step-by-step guidance and prompts students to work through problems on their own.
If a student asks the software to complete an entire assignment, automatic reminders push the user back into Study Mode.
Parents can link their accounts with their teenager's account to establish quiet hours that block access during designated time blocks.
Parents cannot view their child's conversation history or private prompts.
OpenAI released a statement describing the safety alert mechanism for ChatGPT for Teens:
“Parents don't have access to their teen's conversations, except in rare cases where our system and trained reviewers detect possible signs of serious safety risk,”
If automated systems and human reviewers spot indications of acute self-harm or violent threats, OpenAI sends alert notifications directly to linked parents.
Teenagers and parents retain the ability to sever the account link at any point, though parents receive an automated notification if a teen disconnects.
To prevent minors from bypassing safeguards by creating standard accounts, OpenAI deployed an age-prediction model running in the background.
This tool estimates age based on account usage patterns and automatically forces accounts into the teenage environment when it identifies minor usage.
In specific regions, OpenAI will request formal identification if age uncertainty remains.
Child development experts and online safety watchdog groups have raised persistent warnings regarding teenagers using conversational systems.
Previous research showed teenagers developing unhealthy emotional attachments to software or receiving dangerous responses to self-harm queries.
Educators also reported widespread issues with students relying on synthetic text to complete assignments without learning core material.
OpenAI continues running trial deployments across partner school districts to measure learning outcomes and system interactions.
