This event brings total solar darkness to continental Europe for the first time in 27 years. The peak duration of totality lasts 2 minutes and 18 seconds in international waters off the western coast of Iceland.

Path of the Shadow and Local Viewing Times

The eclipse begins at local sunrise on the Taymyr Peninsula in Siberia. Because Arctic summer creates midnight sun conditions in that region, sunrise occurs at 11:59 p.m. local time on August 12.

The shadow moves south over eastern Greenland and hits western Iceland during the late afternoon. Residents in Ísafjörður see totality at 5:44 p.m. GMT, followed by the capital city of Reykjavík at 5:48 p.m. GMT.

The umbra reaches northern and central Spain near sunset. Cities including A Coruña, León, Zaragoza, and Valencia experience complete solar blockage between 8:27 p.m. and 8:33 p.m. local time.

A small ten-square-mile zone in northwestern Portugal catches the edge of totality. Partial eclipse phases remain visible across North America, much of Europe, and northwestern Africa.

NASA and the European Space Agency deployed airborne and ground instruments to analyze the solar outer atmosphere.

A NASA WB-57 research aircraft flies along the shadow track at 460 miles per hour at an altitude of 50,000 feet.

The solar eclipse coincides with two other sky events on the same calendar date. The annual Perseid meteor shower reaches maximum activity on the night of August 12, producing 30 to 50 meteors per hour under dark skies.

A New Moon phase eliminates background moonlight during the shower peak. In the pre-dawn sky, six planets—Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune—appear spread along the ecliptic path.

Eye safety authorities warn against looking directly at partial eclipse phases without ISO 12312-2 standard protection. Optical devices like binoculars, cameras, and telescopes require specialized solar filters to prevent immediate thermal eye injury.

Hotels and travel accommodations along the Spanish and Icelandic viewing tracks report full bookings. Local transportation departments in Spain posted traffic advisories along major western expressways to manage influxes of mobile observers.
